  • BlackBerry Messenger is coming to iOS and Android this summer, BlackBerry (BBRY -4.5%) announces at Live (webcast). Had this move been made 2-3 years ago, BlackBerry would've had a shot at dominating a giant mobile IM market. But now, it faces intense competition from the likes of WhatsApp, Kik, Viber, and Facebook Messenger, many of whom have 100M+ users. Nonetheless, an installed base of 60M users gives BBM a chance to make some headway. BlackBerry is also launching BBM Channels, a platform for connecting to brands and celebrities, and Thorsten Heins promises the iOS/Android versions of BBM will eventually support VoIP and screen sharing. [View news story]
"BlackBerry would've had a shot at dominating a giant mobile IM market."

Still time to dominate the market with a free Message system that will be better than all of those others.

  • BlackBerry: Why The CEO Dismissing The Future Of Tablets Is Concerning [View article]
With QNX the phone doesn't have to be the complete cpu power. It could use a cpu in a "dumb" monitor to enhance the main cpu. In theory, you could have a cpu in your monitor/tablet/screen for basic graphic capabilities. Hook up a gpu cube that increases that capability. And then when you place your phone on the desktop, those 2 other cpu devices combine with the phone to make a more powerful device.

Wouldn't it be nice if you wanted to upgrade your graphics card and all you had to do was buy a new graphics cube and wirelessly connect it to your "desktop".

I would prefer BlackBerry leverage QNX and brand more hardware items so that people get the idea that the new BlackBerry is more than just phones.

Currently BES 10 running legacy devices requires a BES 5 server. After the BES 10.1 release, BES 10 will no longer require the BES 5 server.

Actually, it is only the mid-tier phone. The high end one isn't out yet.

    ".whereas Blackberry has no tablet"

Except for the one that's been out for over 2 years and still has better specs than the newly released small tablet from Apple.

  • Has BlackBerry's Smartphone Business Gotten Dumb? [View article]
You keep adding PlayStation and Nintendo. Do you think someone would buy a $200 - 600 phone without using the "phone" part of the device?

The only ones that matter are smart phones and regular phones and it doesn't matter which platform it comes from, because it wasn't from BlackBerry. That means it is a new customer and that BlackBerry has captured. Are you going to at least admit the truth of that?

  • Has BlackBerry's Smartphone Business Gotten Dumb? [View article]
40-50% of all new Z10 buyers came from iOS or Android. Windows phone is a nothing burger. So, not only have they sold the minimum phones needed to start profiting off each additional sale, they have begun to get buyers from outside their current base.

Since the smart phone market is still expanding, you no longer need to have 50% of the market to be a viable business. Back in the day, not having any debt and making cash over expenses was enough to show value for a good stock price. Now that the stock market has disconnected itself from reality, apparently you need a cult following to be worth anything.

To reiterate, not everyone needs to be Subway to be successful. By making a profit, it means the company has room to grow. The pie is not static, it grows and contracts, having a 10 percent of the pie today means something different tomorrow.

They only needed to sell 1.4 million Z10s to make a profit. If they sold to every one of their 70 million subscribers, I'm betting it would hold the company and their $2 billion in reserves with ZERO debt over for some time.
