  • How Long Does A 'Typical' Oil Downcycle Last? [View article]
Follow the Hughes rig count, we will know when the bottom is in when the Plug and Abandon count is growing faster than the spud count for new wells.

  • What Happened To The Dividend Growth Investor Who Didn't Cut And Run [View article]
January 20th, 2008 sold all "So" called Dividend Champions, GE, WFB, JnJ, etc, due to plain old fashion fear. Stayed all cash until August 2009, re bought, all in in the next 6 months. Today my average dividend/total investment return is in the 20%+ range.
    Sometime fear works!

  • Plenty Of Reasons To Be Optimistic About Transocean [View article]
My first Job on a driling Rig was on the Drilling Barge Rig "Barge Heck" Resource Drilling now Transocean "RIG" in April of 82, oil was $42, 4,000 rigs working everyone saw no end in sight, by May 30 oil was in the single digits, rig usage dropped to the 500 and below average, only rigs working were P&A, plug and abandon, to much oil not enough demand, drillers bankrupt by the handfulls for the next 5 years, history repeated in 1988, 1994 and 2001, it has been a long profitable run for the drillers since, but, major capital investments and major debt loads.
The patch outlook for oil seems to be in the low $60's if it falls that far they will be looking for places to stack their rigs. "not my forcast".
LONG RIG, Long SDRL. Buying more as the downward swing continues.

After 30 Plus years in the oil patch, 30/40 dollar oil looks very possible wieghing the supply/demand ratio. If that happens what will the US economy look like?

  • Failure to lift U.S. oil export ban may cause big drilling drop, Pioneer CEO says [View news story]
Worked in the Oil Patch for 30 Plus years, when the price of oil drops below the cost of exploration returned value the drillers lose the contracts to punch holes in the ground. In the drilling industry it can go from boom to bust virtually overnight.

  • $5T Permian Basin boom threatened by falling crude prices [View news story]
Price of oil dropped into the 30,s in 08/09 from the 120,s. having worked for 20 plus years in the oil patch I have seen the price of oil drop 50% practically overnight which results in drilling contract cancellations, the patch has seen a drop of the rig utilization from 1800+ rigs down to 400 rigs in a two week period. Always because of the supply/price ratio. May/may not happen once more. The economy of today is more dependent for job growth on the oil patch than any other time in my lifetime. Would not like to see the possible devastation that could occur.

  • Now Is The Time To Be Fearful [View article]
In the late sixties and well into the seventies the people of the country realized that they could have their health care cost taken care of in large part by their employer through employee heath insurance. Hence the cost of care started to escalte to where today one cannot afford to self insure. proving that if it is free or a very low out of pocket cost to the user the cost will syrocket. Wher is it likely to be with the new system in place, remembering we have a gimme society well inplace in the great USofA.
