  • Adding Fertilizer and Mulling the Market as a Commodity [View article]
it's a good thing FDX isn't getting hurt by high oil. yes, just the consumers, not stocks like fdx or ups. the high price of oil will filter through and hurt retailers, transports and eventually, ags. the chinese/indians and others who are starving will go back to eating rice oriented diets instead of protein as protein requires a lot of ridiculously priced fertilizer and most of these countries are self sustaining as far as rice is concerned. everyone in the ag trade assumes there is no substitution at higher prices of fertilizer. there is and this is why the price of rice is skyrocketing. a high price of rice is bearish for fertilizers. why? because rice requires no fertilizer and its high price is portending a move away from corn/protein based diets. if I'm a vietnamese national, do I pay 4 months of salary for a cheesburger or a few cents for some healthy and nutrious Pho. If I'm an Indonesian, do I spend a fortune on a rib eye or settle down for some basically free nasi goreng?

  • As With Fertilizer Commodities, POT Bubbles [View article]
midwest dude...I agree with you, rationality was a bad choice of words. I'm not talking about speculators, but rather an oligopoly setting prices. It's not beyond politicians to give monopolies and oligopolies a hard time. It happens all the time and is a risk.

I think, politically, with the food shortages across the globe, that the price fixing authorities in the US and Europe will soon look into the pricing practices of canpotex and other potash sellers and try to force some rationality into the pricing. It's a win/win politically as China would benefit as would the politician who saves the starving masses. Bush has had a soft spot for Africa and other 4th world areas. Also, the potash industry has been investigated before in the earlier part of the century for both dumping and raising prices. too much risk for me.

one thing I think you missed...there aren't a lot of shorts in these stocks which leads me to believe there are a lot of weak longs at these levels. will be interesting for sure to see if Janus can keep POT up here.
