  • Cypriot finance minister Michael Sarris says "significant progress" has been made Saturday in discussions with the Troika. Officials appear to be leaning towards a deal which will tax deposits over €100K by 25%. Sarris says a proposal may be ready as early as Saturday evening but some in parliament say a vote may not occur until after Cypriot President Nicos Anastasiades meets with EU officials in Brussels Sunday. [View news story]

  • How Apple Gave Wall Street The Middle Finger [View article]
    Re Fat Banker Comments 465

Did I say anything about Apple the company? No, I said Apple's stock. Your little speech falls on deaf ears as I don't care. Apple has reached its peak and will now stay stagnant or go backwards unless they immediately come up with something new & magical. No one stays on top forever. Enjoy the downward ride as the market corrects and/or hedge funds continue dumping randomly en masse.

  • Problem sovled? With strapped local governments lacking the means to make good on their massive borrowings, Chinese banks rolled over at least 75% of the maturing debt last year (interest only? option ARMs?). It begs a question: Who's rolling over the banks' borrowings? [View news story]
    The Federal Reserve of course!

  • How Apple Gave Wall Street The Middle Finger [View article]
I think a more accurate title would've been "Apple stock gives the middle finger to share holders".

  • Why Investors Should Consider GE A Good Short Sale Candidate [View article]
GE is an AWFUL short candidate for three reasons. First of all the market is trending upwards. Second is that they just beat earnings and are moving up on heavy volume. It is highly unlikely that they just reverse Monday unless the overall market starts tanking, and even then its not likely. Lastly, the stock doesn't move. It has been sitting around $20 for a long time now. There are many better candidates for shorting and this article doesn't do anything to convince me otherwise.

I would advise against selling deep in the money calls unless you want to be removed from your position on the next ex-dividend date.

  • A major bear on Facebook (FB) turns bull, with BMO bypassing Hold, and upgrading the stock to Buy from Sell. The price target is hiked to $32 fro $15. • Standard & Poor's says current fiscal cliff talks are not likely to have any effect on its current AA+/A-1+ ratings on the U.S. government after already lowering them in August. S&P sees a contracting economy if there is no agreement, but says any deal likely would prove "insufficient to place the U.S. medium-term public finances on a sustainable footing." [View news story]
I have no idea what the future holds either but I do know that 16.4 Trillion in debt and climbing is bad.

  • "There’s a very real undercurrent that’s making the rounds in Silicon Valley that could hurt Facebook: A view that it can no longer innovate. Worse: That it’s no longer really even trying," writes Sarah Lacy, discussing the critical reaction seen for Facebook's (FB) Poke app, widely seen as a knockoff of the popular Snapchat. Other recent products have also been criticized as knockoffs. Facebook, which has poached a lot of talent from tech giants, risks losing its appeal to top engineers if its reputation for innovation withers. [View news story]
With the fiscal cliff news Facebook could be $20 by the end of the week. If the market tanks sometime in the next year FB will be closer to Zynga prices. Its far too volatile of a stock to stand up well to any kind of hard market down turn.

  • Early results suggest a weak holiday season for retailers, with MasterCard's SpendingPulse reporting sales just 0.7% higher than a year ago. "It's a lost season," says the group's Michael McNamera. Not too surprising, major discounting was common in the days leading up to the holiday, and even greater bargains are expected after. [View news story]
Growth cannot continue forever. The sooner these idiots figure this out the sooner we can get on with a new economic and financial system.
