  • Thinking About Tesla's Gross Margins And Service Costs [View article]
He said the service department should not make a profit, that doesn't mean Tesla needs to provide service at a loss.

  • Tesla: Yesterday's Sell-Off Was Unwarranted [View article]
Watching the video, the fire didn't spread under the Model S (where all the batteries are). So Tesla is doing something right in their battery pack design

For comparision, this regular car fire spread a lot worse:

  • BlackBerry up slightly following FQ2 report, $934M inventory charge [View news story]
I've been long BBRY and finally took the loss. Blinded by my love of the phone (Q1) and didn't take seriously all the mis-steps by the company. Zero marketing, botched BBM multi-platform launch. Such a disservice to long time shareholders, and a waste of a great product. Good bye BBRY, never again.

  • Tesla Motors: Original Pricing Model And Non-GAAP Numbers' Significance [View article]
For the same reasons why someone would buy a used BMW 5 series instead of a new and lower priced 3 series. They are different vehicles.

  • The Potential Impact Of Quasi-Lease Repurchase Obligations On Tesla's Future [View article]
Hate to nitpick but Tesla has a direct to consumer model, so those costs that you got from Lexus and Jaguar dealerships don't apply. There is no advertising. No prepping. No storage. No comissioning.

On a side note, if those costs are reflective of the "markups" that dealerships apply to normal cars then go Tesla!

  • The Obama administration talks up auto loan program again [View news story]
Under the same ATVM program, Ford has a $5.9B loan. Nissan has a $1.4B loan. Tesla repaid their $465M loan early, with interest - none of the other loan recipients have.

    For reference, see: http://1.usa.gov/1dn2u4F

So, what's the issue? Maybe your concerns should be directed to Fiskar, the failed company that was going to use their $500M ATM loan to build cars in Finland? http://bit.ly/18ikZiB

  • IHS forecasts explosive growth in EV charging stations [View news story]
IMO it would make most sense to have the Tesla super chargers in higher end retail spaces.Consumers who will use the Tesla super chargers likely have more disposable income, and they will be there for at least 20 minutes to shop/eat.

  • Even 'contra' funds like Tesla Motors [View news story]
It's not hard to get behind $TSLA. First and foremost, they have produced a very desirable product in their 2nd generation Model S -- capturing multiple car of the year awards. Then there is the very loyal fan/customer base that other companies could only hope for. Finally, the Tesla team's ability to deliver on Elon's vision for the EV future. What's not to like?

  • Which U.S. Activist Is Best To Make BlackBerry Lemons Into Lemonade? [View article]
@cochise54 your analogy made me LOL :)

I'm underwater on BBRY and as with the comments from others, there is certainly a lot to learn here. BBRY is an investment for me, not a trade -- but I became enamored with it, overcommitted and overexposed. I got greedy and I got burned. Fortunately, I can ride it out and I've learned to not panic.

I believe in BBRY. The new products are solid. I love my Q10, BB10 is solid. Apps are really lacking, marketing is non-existent, I hope some priority is placed on addressing those in the near term. It's no fun seeing red every day.

  • Which U.S. Activist Is Best To Make BlackBerry Lemons Into Lemonade? [View article]
As difficult as it may be in the short term, BBRY needs to follow through on their 3 stage transformation. Any distraction, premature break up, activist investor is likely to do more long term harm than good.

Long on BBRY, painful in the meantime.

  • Tesla Motors (TSLA +0.8%) CEO Elon Musk says current production of the Model S is over 400 per week and expressed confidence it would reach a level of 800 by late next year. On future plans, Musk also exuded optimism: "We going to have every kind of car you could possibly imagine." [View news story]
Sounds very exciting! A Tesla supercar would be amazing. Mass market vehicles to sustain profits but a supercar to create even more passion around the brand.

  • BlackBerry (BBRY -3.8%) slumps following the WSJ's report about additional layoffs, and another bearish note from Pac Crest's James Faucette (previous). Faucette says checks indicate first-week U.K. sales of the mid-range Q5 may have only amounted to 10K-15K, well below the ~50K estimated for the Z10. U.K. carriers Orange and T-Mobile began taking Q5 pre-orders four weeks ago. [View news story]
Bearish note from Pac Crest on BBRY? Say it ain't so. Faucette has claimed BB10 was DOA in Nov, and also claimed returns of Z10s were higher than sales earlier this year (how is that possible)? Unfortunately this feeds the bears.

It'd certainly be nice if someone at BBRY would stand up and defend themselves, a little Elon Musk charisma would do BBRY some good...

  • The Perception Problem Facing BlackBerry [View article]
Anticipating BES10 to be the obvious platform in the BYOD world. BlackBerry has ios and android apps, other MDM providers don't have BlackBerry apps. Makes the BES10 platform the most compelling right out of the gate.
