  • After seeing Verizon report it sold just ~650K iPhone 5s in Q3 due to supply issues, Jefferies' Peter Misek thinks only 5M units may have been sold overall in the quarter - he previously believed sales of 8M-10M were possible. But Misek argues iPhone 4/4S sales will make up for any shortfall to his 26M-unit iPhone forecast. Meanwhile, Stifel notes the iPhone 5 is still back-ordered for 3 weeks at Verizon. Apple (AAPL -2.8%) is selling off along with many other tech large caps, and is down 13% from its Sep. 21 high. (earlier: I, II[View news story]
So the only iPhone 5 units sold were those over that first weekend? Which totaled an announced 5 million sold?

    I somehow doubt that.

  • Apple (AAPL -0.9%) shares continue to have an autumn to forget - they're now trading at levels last seen in May. Credit Suisse suggested this morning bulls should consider selling a Jan. '13 options strangle involving strike prices of $525 and $600. Morgan Stanley's Katy Huberty provided another positive note: she claimed component supply constraints are "no longer an issue;" that component costs could drop in 1H13; and that the Chinese government could issue 4G licenses in 2H, something that would pave the way for a China Mobile (CHL) deal (previous). [View news story]

  • More on Apple: Raymond James reports many iPhone suppliers have "recently indicated an expectation of earlier seasonality," and takes it as evidence of a pending refresh. A big drop in shipments is expected for the June quarter, followed by Sep. quarter growth. The big question for Apple is whether an iPhone 5S that keeps a 4" display (as has been reported) will lead to a major sales pickup in the face of growing demand for larger displays, and the upcoming launch of Samsung's Galaxy S IV. However, an early 5S release would suggest an accelerated launch for an iPhone 6 rumored to have a bigger display. [View news story]
The Galaxy 3 was beaten by the YEAR OLD 4s not to mention having the iPhone 5 sell double the 3's numbers.

There's a reason Samsung is downplaying their phone divisions future income.

  • Apple (AAPL -2.2%) responds to a weekend NYT column noting its low overall tax rate. The company touts its U.S. job-creation efforts and charitable donations, and says it has paid $5B in federal and state taxes over the first half of FY12. Jay Yarow isn't impressed, pointing out Apple includes UPS positions among the jobs it has created, and that its payment figures are inflated by taxes withheld from employees.  [View news story]

  • Apple: Last Year I Said Sell -- Buy Now? [View article]
That's easy, the very same reason Amazon with it's balance sheet is where it is. The market doesn't necessarily reflect "fundamentals" no matter analysts liking the cover of the term for their writings.

Cruel truth is a stock is "worth" precisely what you can get some one to pay for it. No more, no less.

Making a hard 7 in Vegas is at least driven by probablity.

  • "High above the Alps my Gnome is hearing a rumor that Apple will announce a stock split at tomorrow's shareholder meeting," tweets Doug Kass. The rumor has led Apple (AAPL +1%) shares to spike higher. Update (2:24 PM): Kass is using the post-rumor spike to sell part of his trading position in Apple. [View news story]
Having numbers triple your competitors flagship in the last quarter (iPhone 5 at 27 million, iPhone 4s at 17 v. SIII at 15...) also does not a "broken" make eh?

    "why are Apples earnings dropping?"

Earnings didn't "drop" for those that can tell the difference between the numbers 13 and 14 (the different size of the YoY financial quarters).

  • Evidence is growing an iPhone 5S (AAPL +0.4%) will arrive around mid-year. Mizuho says checks indicate an iPhone refresh in June or July, and that March quarter iPhone shipments will fall to the 35M-40M range (in-line with consensus). Wedge Partners: "We understand Foxconn is currently prepping production lines for ... iPhone 5S production, which we believe is scheduled to begin in the April timeframe." The firm thinks the 5S will be unveiled at the WWDC conference (typically in June), with sales likely starting in July. MacOtakara recently reported Foxconn has begun 5S production. [View news story]
With iPhone 5 selling double the SIII and the year old 4s also outselling the SIII with the SIII seeing declining sales "bigger" seems a deadend.

Besides for the users of a larger screen there already is a bigger LTE cellular data capable alternative APPLE computing device: the iPad Mini! Which is, OBTW, CHEAPER than an SIII/IV with that phone's mandatory voice contract while the iPad mini simply has you paying for the data connection. Over the life of a cell phone cotract that's a large amount of money.

  • The Foxconn recruiting freeze hitting Apple (AAPL) in the premarket is not related to a slowdown in iPhone 5 production, reports Bloomberg. Instead it's more about adjustments having to do with the Chinese New Year. Off about 2% earlier, AAPL now -0.8%[View news story]
Where's the story on Apple's OLD 4s beating the SIII in sales?

  • Apple Earnings: Expect The Unexpected [View article]
Plus I would really prefer writers mention the magnitude of the "miss" since the consensus number is a compilation it's got a spread around it: so how'd Apple do versus that spread? IIRC the last quarter the "miss" was under a percentage point of the stated consensus number and so well within the range, simply below the average of them all.

And flexible batteries and flexible circuitry etc. etc.?

I'd wait and see on this rumor as mentioned to the extent there's an issue (though I've had 4 and never even remotely had this experience) there are alternatives to adding all that sort of "flexible" complexity.

Oh and the "real" cost of owning an iPhone is hardly hidden: just like any other smartphone, it's the contract!

  • Apple (AAPL -1%) now has a smartphone share of 55% in the U.S. (one of its strongest markets) and just 4% in emerging markets, estimates Gene Munster. The U.S. figure might represent a seasonal high due to the iPhone 5 launch. Regardless, the emerging markets figure leads Munster to think a $200 unsubsidized iPhone could arrive by 2014 - the iPhone 4, currently Apple's cheapest model, goes for $450 unlocked. He also sees Apple refreshing the iPhone twice a year by 2015 thanks to the frequency of Android launches. (IDC data[View news story]

  • Apple (AAPL): FQ4 EPS of $8.67 misses by $0.08. Revenue of $36B (+27% Y/Y) beats by $200M. 26.9M iPhones sold, 14M iPads, 5.3M iPods. Shares halted. (PR[View news story]
Such a difference, 0.92%, is within the "noise" of sampling, given consensus numbers are samples of opinions I saw the statistical metaphor as appropriate in commenting on the "small miss" of EPS. The "miss" being discussed was specifically a "miss" of arithmetic after the fact. That moving target of consensus estimates (I wonder how the recent compared to the originals?) versus the reported number. Which, of course, must by it's very nature be "after the fact" as the previous quarter number has to be retrospective for those of us mere mortals that lack access to a time machine at any rate.
