The current fluid is water with sand and some additional additives to prevent corrosion.
Essentially, we are dealing with water. If EPA decides water is unsafe, its replacement is sure to be less safe.
Sad to say, it is the productivity itself that EPA is fighting. Hydrocarbons are the problem. They want higher energy prices, low cost hydrocarbon production will have to be stopped if we are to save the environment.
If you need to predict the future of oil and gas, check developments in the coal industry and the regulation of carbon emissions.
Thanks for the info. There maybe some political interest in "defusing the thing", but it would be naive to think the "Greenies" would credit any economic benefit of fracking. And the "Greenies" can and will win any battle over the issue. We will be forced to search for and accept any compromise available to us. ("Us" being the Producers).
Please do not bet on logic to prevail. These are emotional issues, not given to logic. I doubt that Republicans will be any more reasonable than Democrats, EPA staffers not politicians will be making the rules. And we already know where they stand. In addition to EPA staff, we also have the lawyers as previously noted, This is a windfall opportunity for them.
If you still want to invest in commodity production, try gold and silver.

I dunno, I think you are giving up on Romney too soon. OB will not support it because he is against hydrocarbons unless they are biofuels. He has had 4 years and we have very little progress.
I believe Romney will remove whatever roadblocks that have been put up by the obstructionists. But I would not expect him to subsidize NG
Speaking of roadblocks, the real roadblock will come from OB's EPA. They are trying to find a way to stop fracking. Expect them to do it if they are still around next year. EPA is a much bigger risk to NG than big oil. Big Oil can own all the NG they want, if they choose. Whatever it takes, they want more vehicles on the road
EPA wants to have fewer vehicles....ride the train or bus. Be more pristine.

Exercise caution when projecting coal for gas switching.
Many or most power generators will not make the switch back to coal as readily as they switched away from coal, even when operating dual fuel units. This is because gas units are much easier to operate, require fewer people.
Gas units are more flexible for start up, load acceptance, load following, and stand by reserve. Coal units typically require more maintenance when operated as load following units.
Shut down time required between starts is usually shorter for gas units. Coal units typically require extended down time for temperature cooling and balancing.
- Most gas units are fuelled directly from gas transmission or distribution pipelines. Coal units require on site storage inventory. Storage may also be needed to accommodate ash removal and storage.
The above factors are all considerations in addition to the price difference.
Furthermore, environmental considerations will argue against restarting coal fired generation, once it is shut down. The "Greenies" may look at coal unit shut down as a victory, not to be reversed.
Personnally, I do not believe the decline in coal fired power generatiion will be reversed, although it may be delayed if the GOP wins the election..

Mike,
It is truly a good day. This proves that we do not have to rely on the feds to do it. If they get and stay out of the way, NG vehicles will happen because they make sense, economic and environmental. People will ultimately seek out their best interest if allowed to do so.

What am I missing? I am only an engineer, maybe not smart enough to understand the basics of economics.
The ECB and the Fed print money to buy "assets" that no one wants..........because they do not have value?
The Fed is also buying US government ten year notes (and longer term?) because the yield is too low for the market.
If all this free money is out there, why aren't we all rich? Someone has to be getting a lot of this money! As I understand it, whoever gets this free money just keeps it, otherwise the recession would be over if they spent it.
Maybe the beneficiaries are all buying gold and silver with all the free money? And I have to use real money if I want some gold?
Why do people say we are borrowing money from China? If we are, we should stop. And then we should have Ben buy the "assets" the Chinese are holding. Price should not matter, give the Chinese whatever they want for the "assets" they hold. And then Ben could buy all the notes the Chinese used to buy, and we could stop all this worry about them building aircraft carriers.
And why are we worried about the federal and state debts?. Uncle Ben should simply buy more bonds! Seems like the patriotic thing to do. Maybe assets such as student loans ought to be included.
I am serious about this, we could all be rich. Just make it illegal to buy gold and silver.
If what you represent is accurate, and the rules are implemented, what happens to oil and gas production? To Prices? and what does it mean for the economy? This looks like a damned serious undertaking.

Amadon,
I am not so sure about crazy enough to use the nuclear bomb. Check your history books. History demonstrates many self destructive experiences. You could start with Nazi Germany and work back in time to Rome for starters.

Where have you been? "Whackjobs" are a majority, especially when they get help from politicians, lawyers and news media.
Check out the Bloomberg rules in New York.
If you are still in doubt, you only need the latest news from California.

Also heavy investments in solar and nuclear may be reliant on government loan guarantees and subsidies.
On the other hand, they seem to be a heads up, well managed company in a market that can only grow.
Calpine, with its focus on natural gas fuelled generation may be less risky.
