    For new investors or investors with small portfolio's, I think its counterproductive to advise buying 50 different stocks weighted at 2%. It will only lead to excess broker fees. It takes time and resources to build that kind of portfolio. Its good to be diversified, but has anyone else noticed that over the last few years, it seems when the market dips, it takes everything with it? The same when it rises? When the markets red, everything is red, and vice versa it seems. As for Elle, thank you for having the guts to take a contrarion viewpoint here. These comment sections will lose their value if no one plays devils advocate. And actually, I totally agree with her take on not buying retail. That is one sector that is constantly in flux, along with technology. The banks I would keep avoiding. Google bank failures over the last four years to see why. The number has skyrocketed since 2008.

    So, as a one time scientist, do you consider Silver a scientist?

    Dont forget, the socialist states you speak of havent really had to pay for their own defese...the USA has basically subsidized their military for the last sixty years or so...that leaves them free to spend lavishly on their own peoples needs, to the detriment of our own.

    I am not a doom and gloomer here, although I admit to being pessimistic. If I HAD to sell, I would set my sights on the upcoming Grand Bargain, which will be greeted by a celebration reminiscent of the citizens of Troy welcoming the Trojan Horse into their doomed city. In the immediate aftermath, the market should rise, and that would be the time to sell. Because it wont last long. Actually, I will be buying stocks on the way down, not selling, because whatever happens, it wont keep the US down forever.

    Oh, sorry for hijacking your thread for a bit. I have no idea what any of this really has to do with the markets at this point. The elections are over, and hopefully, the wisdom of the people will be justified over the next four years. I would dearly like to be proven wrong about where I see this country headed.

    Are not beliefs always based on 'something'? Like the Bible vis a vis Christianity, for instance? I am a common layman, and my shadow has never darkened the inner sanctum of any edifice of higher learning, but doesnt the scientific method require laying out ones experimentation and methods for other scientists to replicate, and verify? Did the scientists of Newtons day just take his word for the law of gravity? I think not. Does Silver declare himself to be a scientist? I dont think he does, but if so, I would be surprised. I think he himself stated if the state polls are right, I will be right, and if the national polls are right, he would be wrong. That doesnt sound very scientific, just realistic.

    One small detail with those countries: the US basically relieves them of the need to fund their own military, thus making funding universal healthcare and such much easier for them, but not for us...yes they have their own very small militaries, before you go there, but hardly sufficient if we werent around.

  • Can Dividend Growth Stocks Beat Inflation When Held In A Taxable Account? [View article]
    Im surprised that the top quintile starts so low, at 104505. Your rankings put me smack dab in the middle. I would have suspected that the top 20% were making much more.

    My big fear is that this country reaches a tipping point where the "takers" have more political clout than the "providers". You can see the social chaos that results in this kind of situation in Europe today.

    Bobk61...that will never happen in the USSA:}

    Silver actually deserves a lot of credit. I think he has changed how elections will be prosecuted over the next few cycles. Just think, if a few months out, Silver--and others who were correct this time--are saying hey, so and so has no chance, imagine the angst and dismay that will lead to with people who support the candidate currently on the short end of his assesment.

    There is nothing scientific about Silver's model...he just believes the State Polls are more accurate than the National Polls, and he was 100% right. If you or I built a model based on nothing but state polls, we would have picked every state but one correctly, just as RCP did by doing nothing other than averaging the state polls together on their site with much less fanfare. I admit to being suprised they were so accurate. And he deserves credit for seeing this, but since his model's inner workings are proprietary, we cant know how he actually accounts for everything he claims to account for, but Im guessing he bases it mostly on the state polls.
