Gold Is At a Critical Juncture
I still agree with the "grassy knoll" conspiratorial crowd: there is some measure of market manipulation because Central Banks are trying to control inflation and thus keeping the peasants from departing the currency. Remember this post in about one to two years. If gold is still flat, then I will have been badly wrong.

Are We Facing a Global Slowdown?
I don't often go to malls, I went to one this week that is closest to me.(six miles) At least 30% of the business locations were shuttered. I have also observed a noticeable drop in auto traffic, particularly on weekends.Local stores seem almost vacant except for Walmart. Snaky may be doing just fine, but a lot of other folks may not be.

Houston to Obama: Smell the Oil
I have read this extended exchange with fascination. Full disclosure: I will soon be 79 years old and have been a registered Republican since changing sides in 1954. Although I am clearly a beneficiary of the legislation which has favored the "old geezers". I am worried about the burden that will be placed on our 8 grand children, ranging in age from 25 years to 8 months. I see the government in Washington and in the state capitols as seriously corrupt. The legislature in my home state of Florida provides free healthcare for all members and their families. ( the president of the state senate allegedly has net worth of 6 million) But the Florida legislature has told everybody that budgets for mental health, education, etc. will have to be cut because of tax shortfalls. Funny thing, there are Democrats in that Legislature but I don't see them insisting the legislature give up free healthcare for the solons. Without term limits, a member of a legislature can return again and again and gain committee chairmanships and POWER. Then special interests colonize the legislator and that person no longer represents their supposed constituents, but the special interests. I have seen this happen again and again with both Republicans and Democrats. We desperately need a term limits amendment to the Constitution since the Supremes ruled state enacted limits "unconstitutional... far as OBAMA! is concerned,if you are not a subscriber to the WEEKLY STANDARD, got to the library and get the August 11 issue. Page 24 to 32 contains a very unemotional, factual article that covers Obama in his own words and actions in Chicago and the Illinois legislature. Obama comes across as the most radicl serious candidate for president in our history. Further he seems to speak with a forked tongue.Compare the quotations from his speech to the Democratic Convention in 2004 with what he said at various times and places in Illinois. He is truly flying under false colors( no pun intended). I will hold my nose and vote for McCain just like I voted for him in the primary. Sadly, our choices for president all my life have seemed to boil down to picking the "evil of the two lessers"

Is the Price of Gold Artificially Depressed?
Methinks Lester has been drinking the fermented Koolaid. The U.S. military is badly overextended. This is why we seem to be getting ready to use only diplomatic pressure on Iran. I don't see how our being in Iraq has made the world's oil more accessible. If anything, our military presence in Iraq has made oil availability worse. Of course, the last time civilian possession of gold in the U.S. was seized was done by that nice man, Franklin D. Roosevelt.

A Supply Side Problem: Oil's High Price is Here to Stay
Hydrogen as a transportation fuel presents severe technical and financial costs. It may happen but will take many years. I don't know where the "trillions" of barrels of oil are located but future oil will be difficult and costly to extract and this will guarantee the cost of oil. Any demand destruction in the U.S. will only make more petrol available for "Chindia". The "Chindians" have plenty of U.S. Dollars to pay for it too.

Crude Oil: How Far Will It Fall?
I support the statements of scFranklin94. The era of cheap oil is gone for ever. In 1985 there existed a true spare capacity from conventional fields. But those fields are in terminal decline. Any new production must come from heavy oil, tar sands, and very deep under water deposits. If the retail price per barrel falls too far, production will just shut down. Oil costs will force us to conserve, economize, and seek alternatives. I installed a solar water heater in my home (Florida) in 2002. We are saving at least $50.00 per month in electricity.I planned to put a 4.2 KW solar electric system on our roof but my wife complained that we would not live long enough to amortize the cost. But all utilities in Florida are asking for increases in rates to pay for planned expansion involving nuclear and other means. I predict electricity rates will track the price of oil and other fuels.

GM May Hit $200 Before Oil Does
The days of CHEAP oil are over, whether that is "peak" or not is a matter of opinion, I guess. There are large deposits of heavy oil in many places of the World, but extracting useful stock is expensive and problematic for the environment.( Think Canadian tar sands).I have to agree with Canadian poster who said the U.S. economy is in dire shape relative to Canada. Wait until we adopt the Canadian medical plan and we will really be up the creek. I have just invested in a Canadian company, Ivanhoe (IVAN) that has a process for producing useable crude from heavy oil. Suggest you do due diligence.

Obama Wants to 'Robin Hood' Exxon
This message is in response to the comment by RCK regarding the lack of drilling activity on land presently leased by energy companies: when an energy company leases land, it does so because that land had some superficial similarity to land that has produced hydrocarbons in the past. The next step is to run 2D or 3D seismic to get a better picture of what is down below. If the Seismic is not favorable, you move on to the next prospect. People who complain about land not drilled on are either not informed or deliberately misleading. When Nancy Pelosi took over as Speaker of the House in 2006, she said something about a "common sense plan to reduce gas prices". The Democrats have controlled both houses of Congress for almost two years but I haven't seen that "common sense plan" yet. I guess when the coronation of President Obama takes place next January, we will see the plan. Gee, I already miss Jimmy Carter!

Crude Sell-off: Solid Entry Point into U.S. Oil Majors
I have been investing energy since 1980. Investors seem to be like a herd of Wildebeastes(spelling?... panicking at the first smell of a lion. The fundamental issues on energy are still in place and aren't going to change as long as the "Greenies" are able to control the Democrats and many Republicans. Bill Clinton vetoed a Republican resolution authorizing drilling in ANWAR in 1996, saying it would be ten years until any gas or oil was produced.Well, here we are 12 years later and the "DemoGreenies&quo... are still singing the same song. The Greenies want to bomb us back to the Stone Age, or at least the 17th. Century when all people and goods moved by wind, animal power or foot power. I have a solar water heater that has been saving me $50.00 a month in electricity since 2002. I am perfectly willing to embrace solar, wind, and all other alternatives. But we have to get from here to that great day with an intelligent energy policy. The Greenies don't want us to use "dirty oil" from the Canadian tar sands. They don't seem to understand if they get their way, we will be facing anarchy and revolution. When Green Peace first came out, I was an early contributor. Then I read their material and concluded they were NUTS!. We need more realists in Washington rather than utopians. I don't know how you accomplish that as long as politicians can use public money to buy votes. In the meantime, Those dirty, greedy oil companies ain't going away!!

Will Automakers Switch to Natural Gas?
Those posters who state that NG supply is declining may not be considering the possibilities of Marcellus Shale in the Eastern U.S.,Bakken Shale in the upper midwest and Barnett shale in Texas. Also we made gas from coal in the first half of the 20th. Century. I have ridden in gas powered autos in the Netherlands and the logistics and safety issues seemed to be manageable. Of course we should never underestimate the power of trial lawyers to screw things up. They damn near destroyed the small aircraft industry in the U.S

      The Answer to Energy Independence
longoil says there is only four years oil supply in ANWAR. How would he know? I seem to recall folks saying the same thing about North Slope, and, although the fields are declining, it seems they have produced for about 30 years. Until you can get in there and do 3D seismic, I don't believe anyone knows the potential. I recall that that nice man, Bill Clinton, vetoed ANWAR in 1996 saying that it would be ten years before any oil would be produced.well, TWELVE years have passed and we now have$4.00 gasoline. That nice lady, Nancy Pelosi, is now spouting the same nonsense.I agree 100% with Michael Dawson's view. We have to surround the energy problem from all sides and and mount a multi-modal attack. We cannot have a modern economy without reliable energy. For the record, I am also "longoil".

I am a current Comcast customer for broadband because they are the only game in town. Embarq spends millions on direct mail and newspaper advertising to my home but wont upgrade their landlines in my neighborhood. So much for corporate intelligence. I would leave Comcast in a New York minute if any alternative were possible. Comcast is arrogant, snotty, incompetent. My wife sent a voided check to Comcast so they could deduct the monthly bill from our account and those idiots lost they check!!
