KMI: you are correct that when an important commodity goes up in price, the market starts looking for substitutes. But the technical and logistical problems of "alternatives" for oil must be solved before the age of oil can close. I am one of those screaming to switch to natural gas wherever possible but the present administration seems to believe someone is going to convert pixie dust to motor fuel. Unfortunately, the only thing George W. Bush seemed to do was suck his thumb. The current electric grid is too fragile for a massive shift to EVs, which are only short range. I favor a crash program for nuclear (thorium reactors), and biofuels. But everything I can find out about biofuels and the volume to meet current gasoline and diesel consumption seems overwhelming.

As a retiree on a fixed income, Your data does not seem to fit my experience. I have no mortgage, but electricity has gone up 25% in our region. Almost all processed foods have markedly increased, e.g. a house brand package of ten quart envelopes of powdered skim milk has gone from $5.99 to $7.99. It is now cheaper to buy fresh milk but I am reading that dairy farmers are culling their herds because they cannot make a profit in this market. Auto and home insurance have announced marked increases. My state has dramatically increased "fees" to register and license cars. Other "fees" have emerged from local governments. I conclude many ordinary citizens are being squeezed by the economic anaconda. The anaconda's name is STAGFLATION.
