Kevin is the CEO and founder of Blue Water Capital Advisors. He is involved in all aspects of the business, including portfolio management, financial advisory services, team management and business development, and he is Chairman of the Investment Committee. Kevin is an experienced speaker and is available (under certain conditions) by request.
Kevin brings a unique perspective to wealth and risk management that is very intuitive and measured. Clients are confident in his abilities and trust that their assets are managed by the best in the business. Although he has been a leader within the regional wealth management industry for the majority of the last two decades, it is not his first career. He was a petroleum geologist and academic research scientist for 17 years in his first career. Kevin’s keen sense of risk-reward dynamics was developed during his geological career when he served as an exploration team leader and senior manager in the oil and gas exploration business. He drilled over 100 wells on his own geological interpretations and found millions of barrels of oil. This was a very high risk kind of business, and Kevin learned a great deal about how risk really works from his experiences in exploration geology.
He was also a professor at The University of New Hampshire and Bryn Mawr College for several years and has published 11 papers in international scientific journals and books. Highlights of Kevin’s geological career include surviving a violent well blowout, working as a consultant to Phillips Petroleum, Texaco, Exxon, and numerous independent firms, acting as a Principal Investigator on a dinosaur dig in Montana, diving Australia’s Great Barrier Reef, teaching and advising students, receiving numerous research awards and grants, and conducting funded scientific research on sedimentology, paleoceanography, paleoclimatology, geochemistry, and global plate tectonics.
Kevin left his geology career when the global oil price collapse finally caught up to him in 1992. He went into the financial advising industry because his father had been a nationally-ranked leader in that field with a major national firm, so he felt comfortable with making the transition. Over the years he was awarded the Chartered Financial Consultant (ChFC) designation and has completed about half of the coursework for a Master’s degree in Financial Services. Kevin served as a Trust Officer and Vice President for a major Midwestern regional bank for seven years, and served as a Senior Vice President at National Bank of Commerce in Duluth for four years. He was a member and board member of the Arrowhead Estate Planning Council for a number of years. He has a refined sense of the big economic picture that is grounded in his ability to differentiate meaningful information from “noise,” as he once did while working in science and petroleum geology. Kevin is the principal shareholder of Blue Water Capital Advisors, LLC.

I founded the HRA (Hard Rock Analyst) family of resource publications with my late brother David in 1995. Prior to David's death I mainly handled the “financial analysis” side of our reviews of exploration, development and early production stories while Dave handled the "rock" side of the stories. I have a B.Comm. in Corporate and Investment Finance from UBC while David attended the Haileybury School of Mines in Ontario. Prior to starting HRA we operated an exploration consulting business that assisted companies in the acquisition and exploration of mainly early stage projects in the base and precious metals and industrial mineral sectors. One of our long term contracts entailed us assisting in the design and implementation of a sector wide financial/project database. That involved tracking basically everything in the sector for several years and got Dave and I interested in the stock side of the business. That interest evolved into creating ad hoc resource sector company reviews for friends and associates and ultimately to the creation of the Hard Rock Analyst newsletters.
We ended the consulting side of the business when the newsletters started though we kept our hand in through plenty of free advice (not the best business model, admittedly) and assisted in the formation of a few companies over the years including Pediment Gold (later taken over by Argonaut Gold) and, just before David's death, Precipitate Gold which I continue to be a large shareholder of and advisor to.
While David was the geology side of the business and I certainly make no claims to be a geologist I was born in a mining town to a mining executive and have spent my share of time staking, prospecting, dirt bagging and running surveys. That's a long winded way of saying I know enough to be dangerous. Luckily, I know scores of geologists and have plenty of talent to call on if and when I want second opinions on projects.
I regularly contribute editorial material to a number of websites and publications dealing with both macro economic issues and resource stocks and metals. I speak at a number of conferences each year, both investment oriented and mining sector oriented. As well, I host two subscriber only conferences with fellow newsletter editors Keith Schaefer of the Oil and Gas Investment Bulletin and Lawrence Roulston and Tommy Humphries of Resource Opportunities. .
David and I were very early in pointing out the disastrous effects of gold hedging and gold loan capital financing (1997) and to predict the start of the current secular bull market in commodities based on the movement of the US Dollar (2001) and, more importantly, the acceleration of growth in Asia and India. David was far ahead of the curve in seeing China's voracious appetite for metals coming long before the rest of the market.

I'm an equities analyst who's lived in LatAm for over a decade. Otto Rock is a nom de plume, but on the other hand it's not that difficult to work out who I am. However (and quite rightly) I highly doubt if you care who I really am, so there you go. If you're not an unhinged loop or a lawyer and really want to know, send me a mail and I'll tell you. Ain't no big deal either way. My articles contain my own personal opinions and have nothing to do with anybody else. It's not investment advice, either.
