  • The FBI reports it conducted a record number of background checks for consumers wishing to purchase a firearm in December as the number of checks almost hit 2.8M for the month. While the demand surge is positive for Sturm Ruger (RGR +0.1%), Smith & Wesson (SWHC +1.8%), and Cabela's (CAB +1.9%) - KeyBanc is out with a note warning that the current high level of demand for guns is unsustainable over the course of the year. [View news story]
The "currrent demand" (during the Christmas Holidays) for retail products from Walmart, Target and others "cannot be sustained" for the rest of the year either! Some of these analysts are so predictable and so one-sided. Both $RGR and $SWHC are Strong Buys right now. How can anyone argue that unless you are so left-wing that you allow it to interfere with your investments? Political views have to remain separate from your investment perspectives to be successful.

  • Gun Control: How To Profit From Increased Demand [View article]
Great article, Austin! I, too, see $SWHC as a Strong Buy and have added to my position over the last couple of weeks. Another opportunity for additional sales is replacement parts if the AWB is passed. It may not be a huge market, but necessary nonetheless. Ammo sales are through the roof! Does that mean people are going to the range or just hoarding? Maybe a little of both. People who have new guns want to shoot!

    Again, great article!

The bad guys will always find the tools of their trade--even if it means making zip guns from car antennas, explosives from chemicals in hardware stores, running people over with cars or flying jets into tall buildings. Should we ban all explosive chemicals? Should we ban all vehicles because some people drive drunk? (BTW more drunks kill people with cars than all of the guns combined!) Should we ban air travel? Should we ban any chemical that may be placed in the water system that could kill people? Come on, folks, wake up! Put the blame where it belongs--on the idiots killing people, regardless of the implement they use!

You got the point right--Adam Lanza's mom made a mistake, not the gun. Guns save people's lives as well as take them. Unfortunately, our media seldom talks about those instances because it's not sensational enough.

    AR-15s AND water!

Only the honest citizen would be disarmed, NOT someone who is a criminal. THINK!

I, too, am a grandfather, but I think a little differently. As a retired law enforcement officer and military veteran, it gives me solace to know that if I am at at home or out with my family, I have the means to protect myself and them when law enforcement can't get there on time. Unfortunately, we (law enforcement officers) only saw the carnage AFTER it had already occurred. If more citizens were armed, the "bad guys" would think twice about whether they should carry out their devious plans. Thank God our forefathers saw the need to pass the Second Amendment along with the First Amendment.

    Oh yeah...we need water too!

I am long $SWHC and $RGR, so I am counting on the surge! Do you think it would be wise to bail if there is a big swing up between now and Jan?

Gunbroker.com has ammo and pricing at blackmarket levels. The average investor must not see the numbers. They are at levels that far exceed last quarter or last years sales.

I spoke to $RGR reps last week and sales were so strong they had quit taking calls. All stores in our area are out of ammo as well as mags.

.223 ammo is near impossible to buy right now; .40 ammo is close also. In fact everything is difficult to get and prices for ammo on gunbroker.com have doubled on some ammo. I don't see people not buying at this point; instead Obama has caused Americans to rush out and BUY!

  • In the wake of the recent school tragedy in Connecticut, California Treasurer Bill Lockyer is proposing that CalPERS and CalSTRS, the state's two public pension funds, divest themselves of gun makers. "I want BlackRock (BLK), I want Credit Suisse (CS), I want everyone else to know that we're going to use our economic leverage if it's up to me, and I hope other private investors will do the same thing," Lockyer says. "They (the gun-makers) ought to feel the economic consequences of their bad behavior." [View news story]
Vehicles kill people who drive drunk. Hope they divst themselves of the automotive stocks...and the alcohol! They kill more people in a week than guns do all year! Oh and let's not forget the smog in California too. How many people is that killing or making sick? Let's dump Caifornia in the Pacific. Their economy is taxing the American Taxpayer to death. I wish we could divest ourselves of that investment!

Excellent points, r2q5! Far too often we don't hear about the citizen who saved fellow citizens because he or she was armed. If we do, it is very short lived. I too am a retired veteran (Air Force) and believe the Second Amendment meaans exactly what it says. I don't want to see our nation relegated to the likes of European (or Australian) socialist-styles of government. I don't think Americans will stand by and watch our rights taken from us--not for long anyway. It's a shame many can't see what is coming. Semper Fi, Marine!

The gun control scare has not even begun yet. When the "talking heads" start talking about the United Nation's gun control initiative and Obama signing onto it, sales will sky rocket. Some people are already starting to hoard firearms. Watch the prices on gunbroker.com and some of the other sites. Budsgunshop.com is already having a hard time filling orders for Christmas. Anyone who thinks the scare is over is a far left wing liberal or has there head in the sand!
