10 Reasons To Pay Attention To Apple Now [View article]
I'm also a fan of Tim Cook. He did an incredible job in front of Congress. He speaks intelligently and with thought. i dont fault him for not revealing any secrets at speaking engagements like All Things D. He is maintaining the Apple culture. Secrecy and suprise make Apple a magical company. He is the perfect fit in Apple's lead position. I think we have only seen the first chapter in the Tim Cook era.
Popular dividend ETFs - HDV, VYM, VIG, SDY, DVY among them - have fared worse than the SPY as interest rates have risen of late. Credit Suisse narrows the risk down further, identifying 20 stocks with the biggest share of their float held by dividend ETFs. This basket includes Cincinnati Financial (CINF) and Pitney Bowes (PBI) and it's off 3.4% since Ben Bernanke's May testimony, twice as much as the broad market. We'll post the other 18 as they come available. [View news story]

BP Is A Tempting Value Bet, But What Are The Risks And How Do You Hedge Them? [View article]
Thanks for the article. I think BP provides good value here and I've been adding to my position at these levels. Only difference for me, I will be collecting the div instead of selling puts. I figure with my time horizon and risk appetite it's a chance I'm willing to take.
"We have some incredible plans that we have been working on for a while," says Tim Cook (AAPL) at an AllThingsD conference talk. Some of those plans could still involve a TV - Cook reiterates the market is of "great interest" and that the current experience is outdated (John McCain seems to agree). Cook also: 1) Declares Google Glass to be a niche product, while adding (in a possible iWatch hint) the broader wearable computing market is a very interesting area. 2) States Apple will likely offer more developer options for customizing iOS, but wants to preserve the user experience. 3) Once more hints Apple isn't opposed to a bigger iPhone per se (previous), only one that doesn't meet its standards. I enjoyed the talk. I'm fine with them waiting to discuss a product when it's ready. Why tip your hat to the competition that loves ripping off your ideas?
Apple (AAPL) roundup: 1) iOS 7 will reportedly feature integration with additional online services, including Flickr (YHOO) and video site Vimeo. Yesterday, Yahoo announced a big overhaul for Flickr. 2) Peter Misek remains downbeat, predicting Apple's gross margin will be pressured by its use of OGS touch sensor tech in the iPhone 6 (differs from the iPhone 5's in-cell tech), and by app processor price hikes from Samsung (checks indicate 25%-50% hikes). 3) As Senate hearings dominate headlines, EU leaders are looking to end the tax shelters Apple and other tech companies have created. 4) BrandZ again ranks Apple the world's most valuable brand; it's followed by Google IBM, McDonald's, and Coca-Cola. I can't stand Peter Misek. Why anyone listens to this guy is beyond me.
Samsung Electronics (SSNLF.PK) says its Q1 profit rose 42% to a record high on strong smartphone sales. Net profit rose to a record KRW7.15T ($6.4B), up from KRW5.05T a year earlier. Operating profit rose 54% to KRW8.8T from KRW5.7T. Sales rose 16.8% to KRW52.9T from KRW45.3T, coming in in line with the company's guidance of KRW51T to KRW53T. The results stand in stark contrast those of Apple (AAPL), which earlier this week reported its first profit drop in a decade and forecast margins to decline in the current quarter ending in June. Exactly. With past corruption in the company how can we know for sure. One thing is obvious. Samsung isn't afraid to get involved in questionable activity.
Apple (AAPL): FQ2 EPS of $10.09 beats by $0.02. Revenue of $43.6B (+11% Y/Y) beats by $1.1B. 37.4M iPhones, 19.5M iPads, just under 4M Macs. Expects FQ3 revenue of $33.5B-$35.5B, below $39.3B consensus. Buyback increased by $50B. Shares halted. CC at 5PM ET (webcast). (PR) [View news story]
I like what I hear. $50B buyback and div increase to $3.05/qrtr.
Apple (AAPL) only looks cheap if it maintains its profit margins (35.3% in 2012), writes The Brooklyn Investor. Slapping Samsung's mobile operating margin of 18% on Apple's $181B in expected revenue this year then giving it a 10 multiple and adding back cash yields a value of $370/share. Margins might not decline right away (and revenues may increase to offset), but Apple bulls are fighting the powerful historical tendency (particularly for Apple) of excess margins getting competed away. [View news story]
Margins always drop with initial product releases. End of last year Apple updated its entire lineup. Watch margins improve with time. All the naysayers on Apple will be eating mud by year end.
Tim Cook: The (Negative) $250,000,000,000 Man [View article]
Well said Camden. I stand by Tim Cook. Yes, it is hard to watch my holdings in Apple take a tumble daily. However, the reason I invested in the first place is my belief in the long term viability of the company. The products are world class. I use them everyday. The stock will have its peaks and troughs. I know there are brighter days ahead.
One correction to your comment. I believe Apples last quarter was the largest ever by a tech company. I think only a few oil co's have announced larger quarters.
