Starbucks: Who's Buying $5 Lattes In This Economy?
I am annoyed that every article about starbucks overstates the price of their coffee with headlines like "$5 Latte" or "$5 cup of coffee".

I don't know about you, but I get a grande coffee for 1.90 + tax nearly every time I go. But you never see articles stating "Time will tell if Americans keep paying for $2 coffee".

It appears the formula for financial commentators is "pick most expensive drink on menu (Frappucino), round up to nearest dollar".

The Starbucks Phenomenon and the U.S. Slowdown
I would expect that in New York, so many people. Here in the Midwest I either have no line or perhaps a 5 min wait tops when its busy, although I have had to wait 10 mins before when they were brewing a new pot, but they gave me the coffee for free.

      eBay Update: Skype's Still Growing!
Ebay Desktop is currently quite buggy. I tried it yesterday and it erroneously told me I had been outbid on an item, so I bid on a 2nd item. It said immediately that I was outbid on that item too, no big deal, but curious I thought, so I checked ebay.com and I was winning both auctions!

I had to ask the seller of one of the items (Laser toner cartridge) to cancel the deal and refund my money (I paid them both right away as a matter of principle and left it up to them to refund me).

I wouldn't get too excited about Ebay Desktop and the future of fat client interfaces. With the web 2.0 revolution I don't think a fat client is necessary, and could lead to a maintenance and support nightmare for Ebay, having to maintain both.

eBay's Skype Deal Bombs, But So What?
I would say that it shows that EBAY's decision making ability is poor if it overpays for an acquisition like that.

On a side note I think Ebay desktop is a mistake. Now they have to maintain two separate pieces of software. I just tried their beta and it erroneously told me I had been outbid on an item, so I ended up buying two of the same thing, thanks ebay..

On a positive note though, they are a monopoly in their segment and are extremely profitable, great business. Even an idiot couldn't screw up that business, good thing.
