  • Energy stocks routed again, despite crude’s bounce [View news story]
I suppose that oil low enough can slow down or at $30 it would stop US shale production. Obviously, this reduces the amount of oil and nat gas filling up some of the pipelines. So, sure, low enough oil prices eventually will hurt the MLP's---if it ever gets that low.

You can't really hurt Putin with low oil. He's a survivor. But US shale can definitely be hurt. That's a bigger problem than Putin.

$30 oil shuts down almost all US shale production. That's thousands of job layoffs and a few bankruptcies. Not worth it to punish Putin. He will do what he wants no matter what the price of oil is.

Sold all my EOG last week. Only oil left is KMI, WES and EPD. I have gains in them but they are evaporating fast. May have to sell all these stocks this week and be all out of oil.

  • Kinder Morgan Loses Injunction Against Protestors: So What [View article]
Because the huggers never want any sort of development. Never. Whether it makes sense, saves money, enriches the economy, creates jobs, they don't care. They have closed minds and only see their own agenda.

Both make sense. Both pipelines should be built.

You'd have to pay the taxes when you sold anyway. Just be glad you have gain and not a giant loss.

  • Kinder Morgan: Is The Merger Actually Bad News For KMP Unitholders? [View article]
You are correct Magner. I'm losing my KMR shares also. They were a great tax advantaged investment. I'll probably sell all my KMI shares in January so I can push off cap gain taxes one more year.

Don't like losing my KMR shares. Now I have no control over when I pay income taxes since taxable dividends will now come to me yearly. I don't need taxable dividend income right now. I'm self employed and in the highest tax bracket and also pay the NIIT--obamacare tax on investment income on top of it all. The tax benefit of KMR will be gone after the merger. I'll probably sell it all in January.

  • Taxation Fundamentals For The Kinder Morgan Reorganization [View article]
When your cost basis gets to zero any future cash distributions are taxable in the year you received them(as LTCG if you held more than 1 yr), since cost basis cannot go below zero. If you are asking the questions above, it sounds like you were not aware of this. Maybe need to amend some tax returns. And....I don't think distributions in excess of basis is allowed to increase your cost basis, so you are going to get taxed twice on it some day.
