I worked for 40 years as a mainframe software developer for an agency of the Federal Government. Then, in 2004, I retired and returned to the same agency as a contractor, doing the same work. In 2009, I got fired for saying uncomplimentary things about the bosses in a public venue. It was a bracing experience.
