Without oil, modern economies would grind to a halt. Just ask the average NY/NJ'er if they would like windmills to power their generators after a hurricane.

It's amazing how much the extreme greenies discount the obvious physician properties of oil. Oil has been and always will be a necessary evil

"the only "kill" here would be on your portfolio if you followed Kofi's advice. this guy has an absolutely atrocious record. in fact, you should do the opposite of what he writes."

So true.... AAPL perma-bulls should have been unloading AAPL @ $700 in 2012 and buying MSFT (or anything else for that matter)

  • Dumb Investment Of The Week: Tesla Motors Stock [View article]
That was the first thought that popped into my mind.

If you view TSLA as an automotive company, you will reach the conclusions in this article. If you don't, you won't.

The market is going with the latter rather than the former, as am I.

    Long TSLA

  • The Supreme Court healthcare opinion: The individual mandate survives as a tax. You can read the full opinion here.  [View news story]
But isn't that what the Obama administration argued that it was not???

Can't have your cake and eat it too. Obama just passed one of the biggest "tax" increases in US history.

  • Wal-Mart's Revenge: Amazon.com Has A Big Problem [View article]
Completely agree. I knew this issue would come to the forefront sooner or later. WMT's CEO actually cares about profits and giving you dividend.

AMZN may be getting into other stuff like the cloud and robots and making commoditized electronics, but that stock is too rich to get me interested esp with headwinds like this on the horizon.

  • MasterCard Is Losing Momentum [View article]
Not really. This article is laughable. MA is an accumulate in the low 70s.

Bitcoin is obviously nowhere near as secure nor as ubiquitous in terms of payment processing.

  • President Obama's proposal to extend the middle-class tax cuts before reforming the tax code and entitlements is a "sucker's game," declares Wilbur Ross. There's no trade-off there, it's just the president saying give me what I want, and I'll agree to talk about the rest later. What's being obscured by Washington is that the fiscal cliff issue isn't about taxes and revenue, but that our country is spending way too much. “You can't solve the bulk of the problem with revenues," Ross says. "It’s not going to happen.” [View news story]
Obama is trying to keep the masses happy by pinning the tax hikes on 2% of the population. Too bad the math doesn't add up. The "middle" class has to pay more too

  • Retirement Strategy: Sorry Warren, But You're A Cheapskate [View article]
"Yes, the long-time holders of his stock adore him and have made tons of money in Capital Gains when/if they decide to sell. The more recent entries aren't faring so well though, are they? And that downward slope may get more steep and slippery as time goes by!"

I bought a ton of BRK.B when it got to 1.2x book value (<$70) in Sept 2011. This recent entry is doing fine, thanks

  • Apple building mobile-payments business [View news story]
"It is about disrupting the existing business model of Visa, MasterCard and American Express not to mention the issuing and acquiring banks around the world."

I knew this ignorant comment would get thrown around on an AAPL mobile payment thread sooner or later.

Unless people are hooking their bank accounts up to ITunes, the only way AAPL will make this work is by processing the transaction through an existing credit card processor like MA, V, AXP or DFS.

They will benefit as much or more if AAPL gets into this space.

  • Will Tesla Go To $180 Or $239 After Earnings? Doesn't Matter To Me [View article]
"People trying to save money will buy a Leaf or a Prius or a BMW I3. The S is too expensive except for people who need the extra range for their daily drive."

Those are precisely the customers that the Model S ISN'T targeting.

That's like saying Rolex or TAG will never sell watches because Seiko makes a competent and cheaper alternative.

Good luck with that prediction. Most workers in RTW states have voted against unionization. I don't expect that to be any different

"If someone reads it perhaps BRK will finally think about paying a dividend....they should. It is keeping the stock from performing better than it has."

It would be quite the opposite actually.... it would mean the end/lessening of the "elephants" that Buffett has sought to capture in the last several years and decades. Buffett is able to generate multiples on his invested capital more than what would be had by just paying me a dividend.

Companies pay dividends when they have nothing better to do with the money. Case in point recently.... AAPL
