Double sixes is "boxcars" in craps, which is a losing score. And if by Excalibur, you mean your/our $$, then I agree.

  • Paying Off Your Mortgage Is AAA+ Investment [View article]
It seems the author makes a good point that most of you are missing. If you discount the returns you are speaking of by adding risk into the equation, then the returns are not as good as they may first appear.
I think the market has a lot of volatility now because of the realization that the US, as well as the global economy, is in serious trouble.
I just retired and am using some of that money to pay off my mortgage. It will allow me to sleep better knowing my family will be secure. I hope the worst does not happen, but a paid off mortgage is a good insurance policy against future economic problems.

    Debt free=peace of mind.

Birder: buy a parachute, vote for Romney, take the cheap money, Europe's economies haven't mattered for some time, some equities are still cheap, who says a bull market can only last 4 years?

    Bravo change .

Your comment is right on point. I get tired of people over analyzing the market and then saying "baring any unforeseen event". Reacting quickly to current news is the only way to trade and make money in this market. If you are a DGI, then day to day news really doesn't matter all that much.

rs..If you want to know what really caused the 2008 meltdown read this interview of Satyajit Das by Jon Markman. I read this in Dec 2007 on MSN Money website (it is no longer on MSN) and it scared me so much I cashed out. Saved me a lot of $$. Enjoy!

So let me test my understanding...AGNC is raising capital by selling 32 million shares @ $29.85 and using this capital to highly leverage buying more govt backed mortgages to take advantage of the changing yield curve. So how is this a bad thing? If anything, I see this as a positive.

If your house were paid off now... would you borrow money against it to invest in stocks? Isn't that the same as not paying it off ASAP by not paying extra on the principle?

I can understand contributing to a 401K to get the match, a 50-100% return. And yes, I understand the time value of money, but I don't think putting after tax dollars in the market is as sound an investment as paying off you home and owning it free and clear. Just a thought.

  • SandRidge Energy: A Strong Buy Candidate In The Oil And Gas Sector [View article]
It's a high risk stock with a lot of upside. If you're risk averse stay away. You shouldn't be in the market anyway. Personally, I like the management and their taking advantage of buying opportunities when assets are cheap. Their Mississippian and Dynamic Offshore Resources acquisitions will play out to be great long term assets and the timing was superb.

  • The SandRidge Mississippian Trust I - Declining Distributions Will Lead To Negative Returns [View article]
Phlipsonh; Good insightful comment. Those of us who are long should all take a deep breath and realize that the trust payouts are directly tied to the price of oil. I, for one, think the price of oil will rise over the next 1-2 years and the payout will increase. Will the trust last forever? Probably not, but I think it is solid for the next several years.

You are right, the author is probably taking his profits as we speak...

  • A New Take On The 4% Rule [View article]
Of course, one wildcard in all this is taxes, which almost certainly will go up if the current administration stays in office.

If you were offered an opportunity to convert your traditional IRA to a Roth in the near future, at an advantageous tax rate, would you do it and at what rate would you consider doing so?
