I am surprised. 50 years of trading and it sounds like you didn't see the housing bubble coming and all the turmoil that implied. Over on Silicon Investor, the housing bubble was a topic of discussion for 6 plus years before the crash occurred. Plenty of time to get ready.

I'd like to focus on the buyback issue. Somewhere a stock buying/ trading desk is set up to spend up to $5 billion on BAC over the next 12 months. That equates to more than $416 million a month. I am trying to fathom how that process operates. Does this operation have daily, weekly, and monthly goals. It sure seems like a nice problem to have and a great tool for the company to manage the value of the stock price.

On Friday morningt BAC announced a $5 billion share buyup to take place over the next year. That could put a lot of upward pressure on the stock price.
Bank of America Plans to Repurchase up to $5 Billion in Common Shares and Redeem Approximately $5.5 Billion in Preferred Stock [View article]
$5 billion in common shares. That will be a lot of upward pressure on the price. I expect the stock to rise quite a bit from here ($12.57) perhaps doubling over the year shouldn't be an unreasonable expectation. good Luck, ymmv
George, do you have trouble driving now that you have that funny reverse positioned stent ? My stent was cleanly inserted on the proper lefthand side, too bad so much of the heart had already died but I'm still alive and kicking.
I too like a little bit of BAC in my stock account. It seems to be increasing in value over time.

BAC stock has already doubled in the last 12 months and is likely to double again in the next. At some point it will announce a return to paying a significant dividend. That is a day I want to be a share owner.
Despite urging investors to focus on "core earnings," Bank of America’s (BAC -0.4%) Q3 results show its legacy mortgage problems are still part of its core. Every day, tens of thousands of employees service old mortgages and handle litigation and repurchase claims; BofA’s legacy asset and servicing unit employed 41K people - more than one in six employees - plus 17K contractors as of the end of Q3. I was really impressed (not) by the analyst firm UBS that raised their estimate from $8 to $9.5 this morning (Oct 18th at 9 AM EDT).
Stock is trading above 9.5 as I type this...less than three hours later.
It's the usual suspects who stand to be affected by Fed Governor Tarullo's call to cap the size of banks' non-deposit liabilities. JPM, BAC, GS, and C all have ratios greater than 5% of U.S. GDP. Morgan Stanley (MS) and Wells Fargo (WFC) are substantially below. "This is a major new direction for the Fed," says Simon Johnson. "There is agreement across the political spectrum ... (the banks) should be made smaller and simpler." [View news story]

BAC has been and continues to be a recovery story. Sometimes it is hard for some to see the forest for all the trees in the way. For others not so much. A $7.25 per share purchase back between mid to late July and early August would have yielded a 28.5% gain so far.
My personal expectation is that BAC will bust through the successive tops at $9.65, $9.77 and $10.10 in the short term and possibly reaching the low $11s.
