  • Tesla roundup: Model X buyers pick options, another EV startup draws notice [View news story]
Absolutely! I'm in the market to replace my 2004 Prius and chevy dealers were offering me $15k off for a 2015 volt, I said I'll wait to see the 2016. What's happening is indeed sales due to massive discounts as the next generation volt and leaf start to ship. One dealer had 65 2015 volts they need to unload! Ouch

And the 2016 Volt has an EV only range of 50 miles not 420, that's a clever attempt at misinformation by omission! 420 miles is using the gas motor extender for 370 miles!

  • A Follow-Up To Berkshire For Retirement Income [View article]
That comes up a lot and has been a pretty serious discussion for at least 5 years on the boards. He has already hired the Tenacious-T's or whatever his name is for the team of three who do most of the investing (their first names start with the letter T).

And he has already said that the successor is working at or in the BRK spheres of influence, and would most likely be 55 or under in age.

So with all of that talk over the last five years I am wondering how much "succession" is already priced into the stock?

  • The New Apple TV 4 Could Rival Xbox One And PlayStation 4 [View article]
I think what Tesla is proving is that margins for ICE cars is high because of high maintenance. And thinking outside the box, when it comes to distribution e.g., working around dealerships reduces the investment in distribution. So Apple can do its usual high margin business if one thinks outside of the traditional low margin inefficient and certainly non-customer friendly car dealership model.

Consider this, Apple has some 470+ stores in something like 20 countries. The Apple Car obviously could be ICE or EV but with the engineers they've been stealing from Tesla something can be said about them exploring a BEV or a BHEV. Any who 470 stores distributed much like Tesla's Superchargers, all if not most near parking lots, obviously no the same quantity, http://apple.co/vqZEXW

Let your imagination do the rest.

Speaking to the retiree's cost could go up and the folly of declining capital arguments. I think a retiree needs to keep in mind that not only does the author's model have historic declines in play, but the consumed income is amazing! I can't imagine a scenario where my retirement income needs to double every seven years for my wife and I to live a comfortable lifestyle?! Our income, like most SAers, did not even double during our accumulation years! (see chart)

  • Why Tesla Motors Can Continue Beating Luxury Rivals In Europe [View article]
What? You mean you didn't pass one Audi A6-8, or Mercedes S, or BMW 5 ... The goal of Tesla is to make long distance travel possible in time, not travel on every idyllic route barely larger than our USA bike paths

That doesn't make any sense! Range anxiety is not about population rather miles between long distance stops, the map is about the minority of Tesla owners who will take long trips. The solution for the 400M is mostly and simply their own garages!

Nor is Apple and other top of their class companies.

It's just two different strategies but one still has to do due diligence to find a dividend paying company that is not in "liquidation" mode. Isn't that the point of the dividend payout ratio as a decision metric? Or the 5-year increasing dividend metric?

@Mark, I think it may depend on other factors. We have a Vanguard account and for the last 12 months we've paid $7.00 per trade with a few weird exceptions CVX $7.03, RSP $7.13, TSLA $7.70 & $7.40, but VFAIX was free.

So I think it's free after 25 for Vanguard ETFs, $7.00 for others, and I have no idea why TSLA was so high?!

The trick is "best in class" companies. With that distinction there are certainly some companies that would augment a dividend retirement income strategy quite well. Case in point Apple, Apple doesn't meet the 5 or more years of increasing dividends but bodes very well for the future. I'm long BRK.B and if this "crisis" lasts into December I very well will add to my position which I started in 2007, just before the last crash.
