  • Apple's R&D Numbers - Something Good Brewing, Or Something Wrong? [View article]
True as a percentage of market cap, but Apple's 2% compared to say Intel's 12% still pays for much more re labor, materials, and other R&D expenses.

Yep, MyLink in Toyota, Honda, Audi, Land Rover, Chrysler, Jaguar, Mercedes, GM, BMW

Aren't some of these the same cars that are getting Nokia's NavTeq? Interesting, do you see collaboration/synergy down the road between NavTeq and MyLink (Siri)? Apple buys Nokia to replace Samsung ... Nah!

Further, in 2003 the X-Serve came out, it may have been a false jump at enterprise but it was ... er ... interesting.

The real innovation between 2001 and 2007 was the end of the G5/PowerPC and the start of the Intel/Mac 2004-2005, that was quite a feat of innovation, eh?

  • Enough About Apple [View article]
That's an interesting perspective. So in effect Apple doesn't need to be "first" to market, rather first to make a product people really want to use.

So a better indicator of "the next thing" is to consider what is an electronic device (needing and OS), which if made easy/easier to use, would be a game changer. Hmmm?

Actually the iPod didn't exactly die but was replaced by a wifi PDA, iPod Touch. New form factor old concept.

  • Will Tesla Disrupt? [View article]
As a heavy commuter, who keeps meticulous records, I strongly dispute the idea that the "cost is too much" and have posted real world numbers comparing total cost of ownership of my Prius 2004 with 205K miles to an ICE vehicle getting 25mpg, about average for my I-280 corridor route.

  • More on Maxim's commentary on Tesla Motors (TSLA -1%) (previous): The unexpected price increase for the Model S that is now widely anticipated could be a way to "light a fire" under reservation holders who haven't plopped down their $5K deposit just yet. The firm sees bears jumping all over the development as a sign of weakness, giving opportunistic buyers a cozy entry point. So far it's working, shares of Tesla are down close to 5% since Wednesday's high. [View news story]
RAV 4 - It's not the exact drive train nor the same range, 100 mi range only

$5,000 deposit - my understanding was that the alleged price increase is to spur customers to close the deal or take their $5K deposit and go home! The theory is to clean up the cue from those who are serious or not.

The other theory being deposited is that the alleged price increase is for 2013 orders or those delivered in 2014 assuming the 6-9 month wait continues.

  • Apple (AAPL +3.2%) roundup: 1) iPhone 5 shipping times have dropped to just 1 week after falling to 2 weeks a few days ago. 2) Apple has bought the trademark for "Lightning" from Harley-Davidson (HOG). 3) Apple, which has made clear its interest in lowering its dependence on Samsung, has reportedly dropped Samsung as an iPad/MacBook battery supplier in favor of Chinese firms Amperex and Tianjin Lishen. [View news story]
nice report gensearch2, I assume that's based upon October earnings reports, eh?

  • Evidence continues to pile up that iOS (AAPL) users are much more lucrative (on average) to developers and advertisers than Android (GOOG) users. IBM estimates the iPhone and iPad accounted for 18.5% of Black Friday online shopping traffic, and Android devices just 5.5%. Other studies have already shown iOS accounting for a disproportionate share of ad sales, app download revenue, and (thanks in large part to the iPad) Web traffic. This is a headache for Google, since it has to make search ad revenue-sharing payments for Mobile Safari traffic. [View news story]
I would still like to see some iAd stats to confirm how Apple is monetizing the 90% dominance?

@Jrp3, Ah, I see where you're coming from. I know that the Model S has muscle, but I thought the average driver would ... er ... be a little more conservative because it has "luxury" you know the "bling" look at me effect.

@martin, Michelin X Radial DT: 28K (sorry thought it was 24K), 77K (current set), and 148K. I put 38psi in the rear and 42psi in the front.

Now I admit I'm a major commuter but I don't granny it, and I sometimes squeal around curves, but I save my "speed" for the freeways not rabbit starts on the surface streets. I usually cruise at 70 and pass at whatever it takes.

  • Nokia Rings In The Holiday Season With Strong Lumia Demand [View article]
@edaugh & css, I think you're missing the point of an ecosystem. Those who "use" the ecosystem are using the services/apps/cloud which link multiple devices into a whole "system".

It sounds like what you all are describing is someone who is not using the services/apps/cloud to link multiple devices. There may be some "apps" that are available for all three of the big winners Android/iOS/WP8 but I assure you that using apps on a phone is not the standard way to define an "ecosystem". You're talking something else.

@jrp3, do you think that is possibly a brand issue? on my 2004 Prius I have now about 205K and have only gone through 3 sets of tires, I too have regenerative braking, hmmm? However, the OEM was horrible I only got 24K out of that set.
