Good point that this time the Fed knows about 1929.

I haven't read through enough (just got back in) to figure out whether it matches or doesn't. I'll get to it.

What I can say -- is that macro stuff that's generic and panicked like the "world is ending like it did in 1929" headlines are downright harmful.

This topic was much more specific than that. So I find it useful and interesting on it's own merits..

.... and also so when I read generic alarm articles about 1987, I'll be armed to know to click the little x in the corner and go get a snack instead.

Your data is useful... but there wasn't a reason to start with an insult. E was agreeing with you ---

So it looks like the answer to your original question/ speculation was no, there isn't a similar past moment. Now I don't remember what the implied...

"There is zero parallel with 1987 to today,"

How so? Seems reasonable since there wasn't QE or super low rates.

Just because someone's discussing market past, doesn't mean they support some specific shorting at the moment, lol. (You are very much a trader at heart :). )

E's comments is that such things have existed. Yours is that they don't apply unless they fit the model more closely and exactly. So looks to me that there's an agree to disagree here on the relevance...

Well, I've gotten word from NY/Connecticut -- it was all of an inch or two.

Are you buying today? If so what? Or waiting till it's all down a little more? ...you know me, I can sell near a top, but don't buy back in much when I should...

I missed that this blog article had come out - so, glad you posted a link to it :). Good read!!!

While I'm normally of the camp that the past doesn't portend the future, in this case it's about matching a similar numbers situation which in turn directly effects stock buying motivation, so it's a great find.

Looking for a counterpoint...hum...nope not seeing one. Only that one would have to buy in fairly early before stock prices push div rates back to the cross over point below treasury yields.

The trading range descriptions you've given, are also helpful. (The not breaking through.)

Lol. That would save money - one helmet for all activities, instead of the current one for soccer, another for skating... Definitely time to short whoever makes helmets as this consolidates :). Then go hard long again. Depends on legislation though, so hard to time...

(I'm joking, but sadly it's not quite a joke. My European cousins laugh really hard at Americans and their ligation protection warnings all over the place and safety laws. Even my niece at age 10 looked at a "no strollers" sign on an escalator (next to an elevator) and wanted to know why a sign was needed?)

They're calling it a "historic storm"? 2-3 feet in yankee area? There's normally 3-5 minimum of these every year.

Interesting point. Still if it's going to bring the stock price down, isn't that bad for them? So instead they'd want to pick a more middle of the road?

Though if I was managing and thought any of these could come into play even a bit... I'd play it safe and come in a little low now. Let the fun surprise come next quarter.
