Thanks - you're saying pretty much the same thing, so good to know.

Well, I've read through a few times and I don't get the future structure yet -- but it doesn't look like it matters,

to get the main point -- that VIX can stay low for a while, so can't be used as a timing tool on the low side. Low or middle seems to be it's "home spot."

    As a side note:
It reinforces SG's stable/unstable VIX model as useful. Does add a question with the model of how to know what high side numbers to consider the threshold... but presumably there'd be other signals of recession or worries at the time.

    Bbro -
if you haven't seen SG's VIX model, it's an interesting backtested idea for when to move more to cash for major corrections. (Does nothing about short term trading.)

There's a difference between " suddenly destroying the planet or using up all its resources" and "having an impact."

We are having an impact and have for a long while now. We are on this planet and interact with it. It's worth assessing and figuring what to do about it as the population keeps growing.

The politics are a different topic, used by two groups to argue with each other.

True, all the energy resources require materials. So question becomes whether solar will be able to generate with less impact. It's the only one where the energy absorbed from the source, will come out in largely the same format it went in. Namely heat - light. That's a big savings factor on environment.

I haven't seen anything in solar that's at a point of developed enough to take over. However, on thinking about it, it's the one with the most potential to have the least impact...

Thanks. That matches what I've gathered over the last few years. So it's not low as much as it's in it's normal range (which is what it looks like on the chart to me.)

"12-month forward curve has it much higher"
Not sure how you see that. Through options? It goes back to assessing based on comparision to market expections of the future, rather than actual assessment for the future by itself.

At the very bottom of this article's comments are comments from gelstretch and TF17 indicating that with VIX so low, there's high complacency and now's the time to set up hedges and sell longs.
    http://seekingalpha.co...

    What do you think?

I'm thinking it's not a very good indicator since complacency can last quite a while - years. Puzzled here.

TF17 - okay. I buy that. It's just the resistance to seeing anything as a crisis that seems to first get reflected in the low VIX for a while, before it starts to create a reaction...

That's a huge drop $23% over a .01 cent miss on .90 cents/shr earnings. It seems to be over the light guidance.

I'd was very tempted to get in till I backed the chart off. It's been in decline since early mid-2014 so it's not a good long term hold for me. (I'm trying to do trades only on companies I don't mind being stuck with long term -- since my timing is still "developing.")

I'm sure though you'll get some of that back if not all. That's got to be an oversell reaction.

I was thinking about this as I read various energy articles about protests on all the projects, and global warming (which whether or not it exists, environmental impact exists)...

...the only alternative that doesn't face the same problems is ....Solar.

So that really does have to be the future. It'd be the right area to get into early. Hard question is spotting the technology and company that will be the winner(s).

We don't seem to be there yet. But for future paradigm shifts, which is where bigger money is made (such as internet use), this is in my opinion, a huge topic.

Thanks TF17. It's the "when a crisis hits" that seems to be elusive and not happening any time soon... Definitely when one hits, the a correction finally starts, it will take on a life. Thanks for the thinking on this -- I'll have to absorb it all...

How would VIX at all time lows equal a correction? Means there's not much worry or protection being bought, which means investors will go back in on every dip.

This much fuss over Greek silliness? I'd believe it though. Expecially with the ATHs so close

There haven't been good catalysts for a good sized dip. Stuff is middle of the road, but there's no war action to trigger it, or the gov't doing something notoriously dumb that makes money worry (more).

Still I'm not buying today. Just sitting some more.

VIX up 20% today. Still no where near alarm level. Change in "protection buying" though...

Looks about the same... data's still moderate...stocks in the same range...

I'm starting to see more articles about that it's a slow grind upward. Including from contributors I'm more used to seeing some bearisness from, Price Headley, Eric Parnell.
