  • "Little risk in going long" offshore drillers, analyst says [View news story]
The cost of producing crude is more than $25. Companies in the fracking business are having a very hard time making any money at all, and since there are too many of them in it, some will get out of the business or amalgamate with other companies. Just look at the downsizing going on with SLB and HAL We are producing too much now.

  • Rig count keeps falling, down 46% from October [View news story]
Driller drill welds, and cement casing into them. Then they move on, and if there isn't a new contract to go to, the rig is stacked. The total rig count then falls.
Many wells today are factured, including older wells. Zones that had never produced during periods of low oil price are being produced as the price got higher. Fracking involves using small diameter pipe, e.g 2.00-in that is pushed to the end of the well, and a set of controlled explosions blow holes in the casing as the pipe is withdrawn. Fracturing the casing may take place at regular intervals in horizontal wells. High pressure water with sand is forced through the holes in the casing and helps drive O and G to the well or to other wells.
Much of this fracturing is done with coiled tubing well after the drilling rig has gone. This part of the industry has produced a lot of oil, but if production costs are $60/bbl and the sale price is $50, fracking contracts will slow down, as we have seen.
