Coal Stocks Show Potential for Future Gains

Nice call Steve. The rise in oil will cause coal's relative importance in the energy sector to rise further than it has been. Demand around the world is increasing exponentially, and the U.S. is a dominant player in the field. All bodes well for those companies you mentioned. Being aware of the underlying fundamentals driving global demand is soothing in an uncertain, choppy market.

Dirty Little Secret: Fed Cuts Don't Really Matter

Nice article. It was an interesting week, in that the market went up as 'rate-cut day' approached, and sold off once the rate cut happened. Now that we no longer have Bernanke as a safety net in the near term, I think it will be choppy trading domestically. Maybe some gains, as you say, but modest ones, and by no means like the gains to be expected in other economies. China, Brazil, and for those of steel nerves, India are the better areas for intermediate trading/investing.

China Digital Holding: Buy This IPO

STV has serious legs due to a huge market that they will garner the majority of. STV is still a good buy for some time going forward, as it still was on the Monday morning after this article came out (closed up 40%). Check back in 6 months and you'll see that Mr. Haruni was right. Good call, H!

Wells Fargo (WFC) will become the largest U.S. bank by branches with its bid for Wachovia (WB), after Citigroup (C) withdrew from compromise negotiations late yesterday on concerns about the quality of some of Wachovia's assets. Wells Fargo, with a bid valued at $11.4B, expects the purchase to be completed by the end of the year, and denies it will have to absorb assets shakier than originally thought. Government considers next steps. As the financial crisis continues to worsen, the U.S. government is considering two dramatic steps to turn around, or at least slow, the damage: guaranteeing billions of dollars in bank debt and temporarily insuring all U.S. bank deposits. The moves, which would mark the government's most extensive intervention to date, are in discussion stages only. Credit stays frozen. As frozen credit markets refuse to thaw, the cost of default protection on corporate bonds reaches new global records amid investor concerns the credit crisis will trigger corporate failures as companies struggle to finance their businesses. Interbank lending remains limited, and borrowing from the Fed's expanded discount window continued its trend of setting new highs every week, as the total daily average rose to $420.2B vs. $367.8B last week.
