  • Shell's (RDS.A) deal with Kinder Morgan (KMI) to export liquefied natural gas from an existing import terminal would need U.S. permission to export to countries with which the U.S. doesn't have free-trade agreements. But due to Shell's deep pockets and its LNG experience, the effort could stand out amid ~20 projects awaiting permits; so far only one, Cheniere's terminal, is authorized for exports and is under construction. [View news story]
Obama has the power over licensing here. I'm not sure why that is but it would seem that politics will be the deciding factor. The good of the nation should be the deciding factor, but that seems to be secondary in this day and age.

I would agree to some extent with Luke Warm. However, this administration acts and reacts in a purely political way. The Keystone Pipeline project is a great example. For the good of the nation it should be started ASAP. Politically it should be decided after the Nov. elections, this way you keep the unions and the Greens satisfied. If the Admin. decided now they would lose one side or the other. Many voters would favor an attack by govt. against anything to do with the oil and gas business, which is demonized by govt. officials. Since the good of the nation is not a top priority of our senior politicians I would not rule out anything that they might come up with.
