  • Global PC shipments fell 13.9% Y/Y in Q1 to 76.9M units, per IDC. That surpasses Q4's 6.4% drop and Q3's 8.6% decline, and is steep even in light of IDC's recent commentary. IDC: "It seems clear that the Windows 8 (MSFT) launch not only didn’t provide a positive boost to the PC market, but appears to have slowed the market." H-P (HPQ) was the market's leader, but its share fell 200 bps Y/Y to 15.7%. #2 Lenovo (LNVGY.PK) saw its share rise 210 bps to 15.3%, and #3 Dell's rose 40 bps to 11.8%. Apple's (AAPL) U.S. share rose 60 bps to 10%, though U.S. Mac shipments fell 7.5% to 1.4M.  [View news story]

  • Apple Q4 Earnings Recap: Mixed Results; iPad Cannibalization A Key Concern  [View article]
iPad mini cannibalization is definitely a threat. I have heard many people complaining how heavy iPads get and how they wish for a smaller and lighter one. Thanks for pointing it out. If Apple can still hold up to its iPhone lead and solve its supply issue, and launch in China. Apple can make history FQ1 again.

  • Intel: Buy This Deeply Undervalued Chip Stock Now  [View article]
you should also mention how integrated GPU (if you haven't), i.e.
Intel 2000,3000,4000 has gotten so good that they are good enough to play entry-level video game such as diablo 3 at low settings. I personally think this is a huge step for Intel to eat into AMD and Nvidia's market. Not needing a discrete video card will ultimately lower the price of the device, luring more demand.

  • Will Angie's List Ever Be Profitable?  [View article]
This is a great article, Tae! Angie's List is honestly a good idea and a great service but obviously its not a great/sustainable business. I will definitely buy some puts a few days before Angie reports its earning if they aren't super overpriced. Thanks again!

  • Another Blow-Off Top For  [View article]
I dont understand why YELP could pop so much after its earnings. Its earning report did show some positives but I believe the risks they have still outweigh the achievement they have so far. I bought some Aug puts two to three days after their earnings which i thought would be relatively safe seeing the stock has popped over 30~40%.. guess what.. it kept rising. My Aug is so negative because of this play, i dont even know if I can correct the red T_T

  • Zipcar Has Tremendous Potential  [View article]
Lets talk about brand loyalty here, too. I have been using Zipcar for over a year now. Its easiness to use and great integration with smart phones have always been a huge plus for the company. You can unlock, lock, and honk the car using your smart phone. Avis has 25,000 cars, true. But are they ready to buy spots on the street and put out massive advertisement effort yet? Considering there are only that many sweet spots for the car sharing parking. I honestly don't think a city will allow fierce competition which will essentially have to include Hertz, Avis, and other players such as car2go to have their own spots. What's great about Zipcar is that it allows driver under 21/25 to drive the car. You only need to have a valid license for over a car. For hertz, you need to pay underage fee even for just renting a hour. Zipcar has the capability and efficient use to technology to cut down costs and maintain their fleet of vehicles. They just need more members and users and get their parked cars going! Zipcar is not exactly new but it has strong foundation in social networking and fresh website design. If they don't make significant mistakes or being out-spend by large companies such as Hertz, Enterprise, Budget Avis in parking spots, lobbying effort. They will prevail.

  • Apple Momentum Waning  [View article]
Macs only has 9% of the entire computer market. iPads have about 60% of tablet market. But iPhone only has about 6% of the cellphone market.

A year and half ago, a 12 year-old Chinese boy traded his liver for an iPad. This tragic incidence shows how much Apple product is valued at emerging markets, at least China. My parents who are in their late 50's got their iPhones about two years ago, and Yesterday, I even got a draw something from my mom! So.. I am pretty sure, they have completed adapted Apple's products and interface.

Older people are starting to ditch their feature phones and start to use smartphones and Apple products. Needless to say, Younger people are already obsessed with Apple products. In my university, they are definitely more Macs than PCs and I have an increasing number of friends switching to Macs as well. In fact, my family of 4 owns a total of 16 Apple products, which are 2 MacBook Air, 3 MacBook Pro, 8 iPhones, and 3 iPads. We also spend a lot on Apple softwares (Aperture, iLife,) and tons of Apps.

Apple is also a clear market leader and price setter. MacBook air, the first ultrabook was released about 3-4 years ago. If you look at other ultrabook products, they all have about the same price, and look just like Macbook air (Asus Zenbook especially)

Apple has today's value because of its huge profit margin and distinguished product. But their market share is extremely low which gives them so much more room to grow and expand. I agree that Apple is probably going to lose their momentum for the next two or three months because no new products will be announced. But I can already see Apple gains its momentum again when iPhone 5 and the new macbook family are announced. I think people just need some more patience.

  • Those excited about Apple's (AAPL) dividend might want to cast their minds back to what happened to Microsoft (MSFT) when it bowed to pressure and started payouts in early 2003. "Microsoft within two years quickly moved from a growth company to a boring, fuddy-duddy, income-producing company," says Villere partner George Young.   [View news story]
Apple produces both software and hardware. Microsoft essentially only produces softwares for others to incorporate into their devices. One biggest Microsoft's recent failure I can think of is the Winsdows Vista. And Windows 8 is most likely be a failure as well. People are constantly switching to Macs but I haven't heard much about people switching to Windows from Mac...

  • I'm Selling My Stake In Zipcar  [View article]
I think Zipcar's biggest competitor is actually the p2p network. I have spent some time surfing around different p2p services' websites, I was surprised that they actually have thousands of users and some cars' hourly rate is even lower than Zipcar's. Also, the p2p car doesn't have logo on it (some people dont like people to find out they are driving a rental car).

  • Is this antenna-gate 2.0? Reports are piling in that the new iPad (AAPL) runs significantly hotter than the iPad 2, a problem that occasionally leads to error messages and shutdowns. The power needs of the new iPad's retina display are a likely culprit. Apple has responded with a terse comment asserting the device "operates within our heat specifications."   [View news story]
I don't think we should overlook this problem. Overheating is a totally subjective and relative term. My macbook pro "overheats" when it sits on my lap but it is not when it is on the desk. Will people still buy iPads? Yes, they will despite the emerging complaints. I thought iPhone 4's antenna gate was a more serious problem but has it really affected its sales? Medias are just riding on the Apple roller coaster to get the attention.

  • Market Fails To Price Pandora As An Apple Story  [View article]
I think before Pandora can really get a larger share of the market, the problem with limited data plan and its inability to connect to car radios need to be solved first. Once they are solved, music industry will ultimately lower their charges on Pandora as it reaches way more people. ..then ya, I will believe Pandora can be AAPL.
