  • AbbVie Gets Its 'Tax Break' In Shire [View article]
Very few people know or discuss the capital gain issue. I got my first taste with Eaton a couple of years ago.

I have both as well. In addition, the yield is usually higher than the MLP counterpart. Lnco vs Line as well.

  • Medtronic Not Sticking Around To Rearrange Chairs On The Titanic [View article]
I agree with the comment about the shareholders pay the tax since their shares are being sold. I 1st learned about this the hard way with my ETN holdings. The only good news was that the stock continued to perform and I have a higher tax basis, however, the tax fact to the shareholder receives almost no attention and appears to be swept under the rug !

You forgot to mention the most important iassue, in my opinion, that being the doubling of the national debt that cannot nor will not be repaid ! What will happen to the budget and the economy when the US Gov't has to pay real interest rates on the debt someday ?

  • Why Philip Morris Is A Better Buy Than Altria [View article]
I own both and the real problem with implementing your idea, if I were even to agree, would be the 30%+ in Federal and NYS income tax due on the gain upon the sale of the MO shares. Too bad tax swaps aren't allowed. Finally, if any company should structure themselves to pay no US tax it is PM. There product is sold exclusively outside the US.

  • Should You Buy Kayne Anderson MLP Investment (And Sell The Index)? [View article]
I enjoyed reading your article. I was long MLP's into 2012 at which time I sold and went heavy into AMLP. I went this route because I no longer wanted the huge deferred tax liability at ordinary income tax rates. Since that time the top Fed tax rate is higher by 4.6% plus the 3.8% surcharge. My dividends have retained the same tax characteristics, return of capital, which reduces my basis and would give me a larger capital gain if I sold. No ordinary income recapture. Finally, the dividend will increase with the increase in dividends paid by the underlying holdings and the ETF has increased in price, even after the reduction for deferred taxes calculated by the ETF.

  • Prospect Capital: With The SEC Issue Resolved, The Stock Has 50% Potential Return [View article]
Good article. I've recently begun investing in BDC's. If the stock is so undervalued and the after tax costs of funds is so much less than the dividend yield why not do a massive stock buy back ?

Very good article. I really enjoyed reading it. I am interested in this sector, however, I have not pulled the trigger except for some multiple sales of BX puts which has worked out for me.

If you go with the ETF alternative most of the issues you raised go away. The biggest, no ordinary income recapture.
