  • BDC Reporter muses on meaning of Prospect's large deal [View news story]
lewni, thanks for the suggestion, but how does that work? Should bottom-end price alerts be placed on each stock, then when they occur, take a look to see whether it's a visible downward trend or a random (or manipulated) down spike?
Seems like an excellent idea but please verify its correctness. Thanks!

By the way, unlike many on this forum, I've only been managing my own investments for three years, so I have a lot to learn. They were professionally managed before but I wasn't satisfied with the lackluster results. So now, it's the guy in the mirror.

  • BDC Reporter muses on meaning of Prospect's large deal [View news story]
Nicholas, your points are well taken. BDCs are not for the timid, the risk averse, or those who fear volatility. Nevertheless, long investors in BDCs as well as *all* other equities would do well to have stop-loss orders in place in the event of the Next Recession (or worse). Geopolitical turmoil has been on the upswing and even a rumor can upset our profitable apple carts.
The bull market has been great, but the "writing on the wall" by sensible chart watchers is growing every day. Sure, I'd rather not leave money on the table while the party's still going, but that's preferable to a sudden and substantial loss. I'm hanging in there with PSEC and AINV for now.

HEMP should blast off again soon. Check this out. Discarded hemp fibers outperform graphene for making superconductors — at 1/1,000 of the cost.

  • Vale tumbles, more dependent than other miners by weak iron ore prices [View news story]
Vale's price is $13.87 as of right now. The headline is a classic overreaction. The shorts must be hopeful.

  • Iron ore drops to eight-week low as China credit gauge plunges [View news story]
This could be a good time to buy more Vale. The Doomsday Clock is back up to 5 minutes before midnight, which means the need for war materiel may follow. Who will trigger WWIII? Will it be Iran, N. Korea, ISIS, China, Russia, the U.S., or another nation/group?
If peace prevails instead, then growth will resume. Either way, iron will be required.

  • Time to sell out of Brazil's equity rally, strategist says [View news story]
Vale is a bargain with fresh deals locked in for iron ore and high-quality iron pellets for China's vast infrastructure development and improvement plan. If those other stocks are a sell, Vale is a buy.

  • Does Vale Represent A Strong Value Play? The Struggle For Iron Ore Miners In 2014 [View article]
I wonder how the BRICS alliance contributes to the supply and demand dynamics (if at all). China may prefer to do business with a Brazilian company rather than Australian — all other things being equal, such as net cost for the iron ore delivered. I read recently that the BRICS countries have been making private deals with one another in order to get away from using U.S dollars, but it may not apply to Australian dollars. Anyone know if that's really happening?

I just read this morning that the trailing P/E is 10.55. If that's incorrect, please provide the correct data.

I've held SWIR twice and made a nice $5+ per share profit. I bought it again last January and more in May. It's been going more or less sideways ever since, so I'm ready for some major appreciation. Hope the timing is right.

  • Seadrill: An Opportunity For Believers? [View article]
@fsoriano, yes, balance is always a good thing, however any data, good or bad, needs to be considered in context and with fair comparisons to other companies in the same sector and sub-sector.
In addition, SDRL has even more interest in its future success than we do, and "fatal" mistakes are extremely unlikely.
I believe that Prudent accentuates the negatives and minimizes the positives. It results in an unbalanced assessment.

  • Seadrill: An Opportunity For Believers? [View article]
The buying opportunity evaporated overnight. I had put in an offer of $37.55 to buy more shares, but that's too low. It's up nearly a dollar since yesterday's close. The price dip was a typical market overreaction based on irrational fear.
As far as being a "believer," Seadrill's fundamentals are solid and its future is better than many of its competitors. I hope the price dips again and stays down longer.
