Thanks to supply constraints, Nokia (NOK -1.9%) only shipped 30K Lumia 920T units to China Mobile through Jan. 30, even though the world's biggest mobile carrier ordered 90K. Bloomberg reports most China Mobile outlets aren't carrying Nokia's flagship Windows Phone ahead of the Chinese New Year holidays due to the constraints - Stephen Elop has already stated Q4 920 sales were hurt by limited supplies (reportedly due to chip shortages). Nokia's Chinese sales fell 79% Y/Y in Q4. [View news story]
Nokia should move all the manufacturing sites to Asia. It's waste of time when the QCOM chips are made in Taiwan, then get shipped to Europe to be put in the phone, then ship back to China. Why don't just make all the phones in Vietnam instead? Samsung is building its 2nd site in Vietnam and when they supply the Snapdragon chips to QCOM, the chip manufacturing facility and the phone assembling plant are just 30 miles apart!
Nokia (NOK) reverses course sharply after being higher earlier and is now -5.2% following its Q4 release. Despite net earnings of €202M - the company's first profit in six straight quarters - sales of €8.04B missed expectations of €8.12B and the company suspended its dividend. [View news story]
I don't care about dividend! Nokia has turned into profit and the cost is STILL going down. NSN has a plan to refinance to reduce the borrowing cost, a phone plant in Vietnam is being built rather rapidly and the planned openning ceremony is April 2013. This would bring the cost down dramatically.
I think from now on, it's about the growth and I expect in January 2014 we would see 17cent EPS which is about 100% growth Y/Y.
I don't know if it worths the hype but I think if Nokia could introduce a tablet this year, the Ipad impressive performance would fade away rather fast.
The next Xbox will feature an 8-core, 1.6 GHz., x64 CPU, a Blu-ray player, and an 800 MHz. GPU, according to a spec sheet posted by VGleaks. The CPU and GPU suppliers aren't disclosed, but past rumors have indicated AMD is supplying the GPU, and either AMD or IBM is providing the CPU - the use of an x64 chip would suggest AMD. Meanwhile, hopes are up the next Xbox will support Microsoft's (MSFT) Illumiroom tech, which projects images onto the space surrounding a TV screen while a game is played. [View news story]
PS4 specs leaked as well, both CPU and GPU would be AMD (2 quadcore AMD and 7950 GPU). I guess AMD is turning around, I trust them just like I trusted Nokia 6 months ago
Nokia (NOK) proposes paying no dividend for the first time in 143 years. It's not a great surprise given that the company's been slashing costs amid cratering revenues and major losses. One might ask, what took them so long? Shares +1.9% premarket. [View news story]
NCE does not matter much now since AMRN would be the sole monopoly in the market.
The reason behind today 8% gain (so far) is that BASF bought PRON which is the largest supplier of API to GSK and ABT to produce Lovaza. The deal offers 24% premium to PRON's shareholders which is relatively cheap.
In the same time, AMRN has an exclusive deal with BASF in which BASF can only sell API to AMRN.
Does it mean that Lovaza is done? I don't know! But the market reaction today suggests that GSK is really taking notes (they could have bought PRON but they did not, leaving BASF buying for cheap and threat to cut them short on Lovaza's raw material)
Nokia's (NOK) Here iOS Maps app (previous) hit the App Store this morning, and is already surging up the leaderboard - it's not hard to guess why. After trying out Here, The Verge's Aaron Souppouris calls Nokia's maps "far richer than Apple's," but also criticizes the app's bugs and shortage of public transit data. Meanwhile, AllThingsD's John Paczkowski observes the Lumia 920 has reached Amazon's bestseller list for cell phones with service plans - the white and black models are currently at #12 and #13, behind several Galaxy S III versions. Update: Commenter scavok notes the 920 is back-ordered 1-2 weeks on Amazon, something that likely affects its ranking. (German 920 sales) (Google Maps) [View news story]
I think it accounts the products shipped or full amount paid. For back-ordered, I don't think they charge you the full amount right away!

Now, I guess I would like to see AMRN do it alone more than ever. They just took Lovaza out and recruiting a sale force 300-people strong. I have no doubt they would take out the whole Lovaza's market in 2013, 2014 at the latest, then comes other indications...

Scott, thanks for the article,
I heard this morning that BASF bought Pronova which is the supplier of API to GSK to make Lovaza. The deal was pretty cheap for BASF as well?
However, BASF has an exclusive deal with Amarin to supply API to produce Vascepa only.
So what's your thoughts on this? The big unknown is what GSK has done or is doing, because I assume they would not sit and watch their sale go on a slop. But reports suggest they are behind on bidding AMRN!

I forgot to mention as well, BASF has exclusive deal to provide API to AMRN. So with this acquisition, I guess Lovaza no longer exists since BASF can't sell API to any other than AMRN
From AMRN's 10K:
Our goal in expanding our supply chain is to provide greater capacity to meet anticipated demand, enable supply diversification and flexibility and introduce cost competition. After conducting an extensive global search for manufacturers capable of producing Vascepa API to our technical specifications, in 2011 we entered into limited exclusivity, long-term agreements with two additional API suppliers, Chemport and BASF (formerly Equateq Limited). In each case, following FDA qualification of the supplier for the manufacture of API for commercial sale and other milestones relating to manufacturing capacity, these agreements include annual purchase levels to enable Amarin to maintain exclusivity with each respective supplier, and to prevent potential termination of the agreements. We recently agreed to terms with a fourth API supplier, which terms are subject to contingencies that we anticipate will be satisfied in 2012. Certain of our API supply agreements contain provisions under which the cost of supply to us decreases as we purchase increased product volume.

Good news today,
BASF bought Pronova which is the supplier of Lovaza.
The interesting thing is the price they bought it was cheap (24% premium for average price in the last 6 months). GSK could have bought Pronova with slightly more premium so it can lower the production cost of Lovaza, but it did not do so.
That brought me to thinking GSK was reserving cash for something bigger, and better than Lovaza.....

They broke the sale down into diseases, too. I think the management is determined to fight back! I am long at 28 average (pretty much a victim of the short)!

This is not a big deal except BASF has an exclusive deal to supply API to AMRN only.
So is that the end of Lovaza and the beginning of Vascepa?
I wanna hear your thoughts please!
I am long AMRN, pretty much too long :(
