  • Apple: The Important 'Halo' Metric Investors Are Ignoring [View article]
Paul said "the sturdiness of the Mac product line."

However, as sturdy as Mac could be, the value of the Mac product line within AAPL is only about 9.8% (based on Trefis computation), see screen snapsnot from Trefis in Thinkorswim: http://bit.ly/19vVaMU

    David,

What do you think of this pair trading strategy: short VXX and short XIV.

  • Expect Apple To Surge In Coming Months [View article]
It is an obvious call that Christmas is round the corner and so is the 1st quarter, esp. for AAPL.

    Good trading.

  • Apple Is Ripening And So Is Its Stock [View article]
Falling price accompanied by rising volume - not good.

I would watch AAPL market profile closely prior to buy.

At the minimum, one should wait for a rising price followed by a rising volume for at least 2~4 days, for short term traders.

    Good trading.

  • Cash disappearance machines, 3 VIX ETPs (VXX, TVIX, UVXY) currently have $1.9B in assets despite inflows of $4.5B YTD. The design of these makes them more like options - in most environments declining as time passes. The different construction of other VIX products - VQT and XVZ - has allowed them to preserve a bit more value even as volatility erodes. [View news story]
My strategy is simpler, ie. long or short UVXY... with a prefer to short UVXY because of it's current contango & -ve roll-yield.

Strange. Am still able to do a limit sell short a few mins ago.

May want to call up TDA to ask why I can and you can't.

I am shorted UVXY, VXX and TVIX many a times via TD Ameritrade.

It is true that at times, there is no UVXY for shorting.

Case in point, a few minutes ago, I place a limit sell short of UVXY at both $30 and then change the price to $29.15 and in both instances, my order was active. This is further confirmed from ThinkorSwim platform, see screen shot here, http://is.gd/MUg2uD

FYI, when UVXY cannot be short, even a limit sell short will also fail, unlike this case.

  • Particularly interesting given the decline in stocks, the VIX (VXX -0.7%) is also sliding. The VIX nearly always rises when stocks decline as investors are willing to pay up for equity index options. Surely one of these gauges is getting it wrong. [View news story]
This is an extract from Bill Luby's paid news email/letter: "I have received several inquiries about why the VIX was down with the DJIA down 128 points. The short answer is that yesterday's movement in the VIX anticipated some of today's selloff. Yesterday the SPX was down 0.99%, while the VIX was up 8.3%. Today the SPX was down 0.62%, while the VIX was down 0.5%. Both of these data points are outliers, but when one considers that the VIX typically moves about -4.2x of what the SPX does in percentage terms, if one looks at both days the SPX was down 1.55% and the VIX was up 7.8%, about -5x of the move in the SPX and right in line with historical norms."

Nothing is broken, you can join 'they' by shorting TVIX and thus profiting from it. Ah... now comes the but?

  • SPY: Waiting For The Other Shoe To Drop [View article]
    Thank-you for introducing $BPSPX. It's a facinating index indeed.

I've a looked at the traditional candlestick for this ticker and your analysis is rather spot on.

Based on the weekly candlestick chart for $BPSPX from 2009Q4 till now, SPX tops have always been around 86, suggesting that the current short term upward move may still have some more legs

  • Trading Market Trends With VXX And XIV [View article]
    Excellent balance article.

The short opportunity in VXX/UVXY/TVIX and long opportunities in XIV is finally published - instead of a perpetual 'avoid products like VXX/UVXY/TVIX' that some others keep preaching.

  • VIX Futures Curve Means Trouble For VIX ETFs [View article]
Big crash => TVIX to 100? When TVIX does a reverse split like UVXY (1:6 or 1:10) , then the probability is 100%. Otherwise, from $2.76 (and going lower) to $100 is rather improbable.

  • A Look At S&P 500 Valuation And Darvas Box Theory [View article]
After hyping up the use of Darvas Box for trading, nothing about Darvas Box was actually used and illustrated.

In defense of the author, he did state in his article that "we will learn a bit about Darvas Box Theory", a bit as it turns out in his article.

For those who are curious about applying Darvas Box on (a) SPY and (b) AAPL, see the link below (courtesy of Thinkorswim platform)

A rare product that allows shorts to benefit from contango, what a gift.
