  • Apple: Not Out Of The Woods Yet [View article]
NIce to see you acknowledge the lead Apple has in actually selling and delivering a great Tablet experience. A report out today by retail analytics firm InfoScout ran with the headline "Roughly 40% of Black Friday iPads bought by Android users". So much for Android loyalty.
InfoScout's "U.S.-based panel of Android & iOS users submitted over 90,000 shopping trip receipts" on Black Friday.

  • Apple Breaks Out [View article]
NWCats404: I. too, would like to better understand the methodology of buyback timing. I recall in days past that companies could only buy on uptick, so they don't have the ability to throttle a down draft. Kinda like the old short sale rules; perhaps both are gone these days.

For a few weeks I have been imagining that Apple is in big buy-back mode, and consciously extending the normal end-of-quarter news (hype?) blackout period of into the new quarter, all to keep the short term stock price low for their purchases.

  • Memo To Apple: Prepare For Weak Holiday Sales [View article]
Scrooge, indeed. Author Bofah has made no attempt to scope out the consumer market sentiment, while being hung up on the financial market sentiment.

Meanwhile, Apple's stealth introduction of the new Retina iPad Mini marches on. According to Fisku's iDevices usage tracker, [ http://goo.gl/ACSXT5 ], yesterday, after only 13 days of "stealth" availability, iPad Mini's usages share among all iPads exceeded the initial penetration of both the iPad4 and the original iPad Mini after that same 13 day launch window. OK, that 0.39% might not look like a big number (its 0.42% today, day 14), but that is against hundreds of millions of iPads out there.

And the new iPad Air has already captured 2.5% usage share in Fisku's usage survey, which is FIVE times the adoption rate of the iPad4 at that point, a mere 25 days into the launch. Repeat: 2.5% of an enormous pool of users.

As of yesterday, the two new iPhones - 5S and 5C - collectively surpassed a usage share of 10%. Again, one might read the 4:1 ratio of 5S to 5C as a negative, but 10% of all users in the Fiskar's survey are now on the 64-bit hardware. Repeat: looks like 10% of all Apple users are now on the new H/W. 25% might be achievable by New Years Day.

  • Samsung's New Strategy Is A Worry For Apple [View article]
Yea, supply constraints, right…. Meanwhile, Apple's stealth introduction of the new Retina iPad Mini marches on. According to Fisku's iDevices usage tracker, [ http://goo.gl/ACSXT5 ], today marks the day when the new iPad Mini's usages share among all iPads - after only 13 days of "stealth" availability - exceeds the initial penetration of both the iPad4 and the original iPad Mini after that same 13 day launch window. OK, 0.39% might not look like a big number, but that is against hundreds of millions of iPads out there.

And the new iPad Air has already captured 2.5% usage share in Fisku's usage survey, which is FIVE times the adoption rate of the iPad4 at this point, a mere 24 days into the launch. Repeat: 2.5% of an enormous pool of users.

Today also marks the point at which the two new iPhones - 5S and 5C - collectively surpass a usage share of 10%. Again, one might read the 4:1 ratio of 5S to 5C as a negative, but 10% of all users in the Fiskar's survey are now on the 64-bit hardware. Repeat: looks like 10% of all Apple users are now on the new H/W. 25% might be achievable by 1/1/2014.

Not to be overlooked, 68 days after its launch, iOS 7 has been installed on over 75% of all iPads and iPhones. Can your calculate it? .75 x 700,000,000 is over 500 Million users.

Get back to me when Android's latest OS reaches that scale of market penetration.

  • Android Gains Even More On iOS [View article]
Beautiful analogy: "Apple represent a growing juggernaut of an iceberg. Android represent a large collection of smaller ice flows that the media insist on describing as a massive berg. "

Excellent post by Jiaburg-Sydney-OZ (from down under?). Especially "Samsung-Tizen alliance challenging Google-Android will be interesting". If Samsung leaves the android camp, any remaining tolerance of the app writers will be tested. Talk of fragmented...

kmw3865's claim that app makers will flock to market share. Not! that is an android-fanboy Falsehood. Not marketshare, but profit share. Android apps, because of fragmentation, require far more work by an developer. iOS attracts first-mover apps engineering; then they move on to craft an android product. Get real - how many owners of android-based USB-Stick media players are going to go onto Google Play and buy an app?

App manufactures have and will continue to follow the $$$, not the "market share" based on shipped volumes.

To all Apple-fanboys like me: keep quiet! Let me get another few weeks of cheap share prices before the Dec quarter closes out. That will help Apple buy back shares on the cheap, also. shhhhhh !

oh, and I LOVE that android USB-stick media player news. Perhaps that is where IDC got their millions of "white box" tablets from.

  • Apple Is Its Own Worst Enemy [View article]
Copious28 is making copious sense: "I also wonder about Samsung's answer to iTunes." Samsung's answer to iTunes is to move from fragmented & Google controlled Android to their own ecosystem based on Tizen. Lets see how that goes, and what it does to further fragment the (soon to be lower-case) android market.

  • Samsung: Strong Sales Will Feed Brandpower And Quality - At Apple's Loss [View article]
Thanks for the detailed, sincere analysis. What I find fascinating is that your chart of mobile phone sales since 2008 documents the fact that Samsung has always held a significant lead over Apple. One might suggest that Apple has no business in the cell phone industry, a fact that was almost universally acknowledged when they joined the fray with the original iPhone.

Samsung's big challenge, as I see it, is to replicate Apple's ecosystem. Their efforts at promoting the Tizen operating system may well give them the control over the software that Android does not.

"For all the success Samsung has marketing Android phones and tablets, there is an almost palpable disdain for the essence of Android." - http://bit.ly/1b3zTzV

  • Apple Will Miss iPhone's Consensus Sales Of 55 Million [View article]
"I'm a Belgian guy study finance", he says. Well, golly, Samsung is casting a wide net these days to find shills for their Apple Hate campaign. As for Seeking Alpha's part in this, perhaps it is actually good for Apple's investors that they see the poor analysis being promoted by the Samsung Fan Boys, and allow this comment streams to tar and feather of those inane conclusions .
