3M Beats on Strong International Performance
Yes, strong international sales helped 3M acheive record profits. But before you have those sales (be they international or domestic) you need competent strategies that attract sales. In this field, 3M may be second to none www.newsvisual.com/new... . Their Directors have experience with such firms as UPS, IBM, Goldman Sachs, Merrill Lynch, Sara Lee, United Airlines, etc. Since these companies are all involved in international business and represent different industries, to me this means that in almost any problem 3M faced someone would probably have had experience with that particular problem. Experience like this is how you build things.

Deutsche Bank: eBay May Be Facing A Worst Case Scenario
The author makes a valid point, and the numbers speak for themselves. However, I still feel that eBay is better than people think. Last quarter was the first loss eBay reported since 1999. That means that even in the middle of the dot.com bust eBay was still making money. This tells me that the management at eBay is creative and experienced www.newsvisual.com/new... . Rather than look at the Skype purchase as a lemon, let's consider the possibility that eBay might just have some ideas up its sleeve to turn it into a revenue generating maching. I'm willing to give them the benefit of the doubt after 30+ quarters of profit, I think they earned it.

eBay Watch: Analysts React to Q3 Results
eBay is a buy. They just posted their first negative quarter since 1999, and that was only because of the Skype purchase. Over 30 quarters of profits tells me that eBay management knows what it is doing www.newsvisual.com/new... . With their collective experience and creativity I have now doubt they will make Skype a better product and turn it into a revenue generating maching.

      Google Earnings: Something For Everyone
I agree with the author. If Google's employees are pulling in that kind of revenue each per average, why not hire more employees? Also, those who cite Google's "uncontrollable hiring" fail to see that the vast majority of those are hired in or after June, when most companies do their hiring after the best and the brightest graduate. The management at Google has experience, creativity, and ingenuity www.newsvisual.com/new... . I think they have it together and I have faith in their decisions.

McDonald's Posts Jump in Net as Expected
Numbers like these are why nearly every business student studies McD's management at one point or another www.newsvisual.com/new... . In the middle of a health craze (brought on by the "Supersize Me incident and the attack on obesity and fast-food culture in general) McD's is still able to attract huge numbers by providing healthier alternatives and other perks such as free WiFi (at least in the UK, coming to the US soon). I'm not a fan of McD's food, but I have to give credit where credit is due.

Citigroup Plagued by Curse of Chuck
I know the Board at Citigroup is an experienced lot www.newsvisual.com/new... , but how can they sit by and allow this to continue? Are they afraid of Prince? It's getting to the point where investors are going to start calling not only for Prince's head but also the heads of the directors.

What Is Nokia Thinking? Navteq Bid Makes No Sense
Nokia is quickly losing its North American market to Samsung. Maybe they figured they could use some back channels to make a deal www.newsvisual.com/new... and then this would allow them to get some of that market share back. I also agree with User 32214, China, India, and Africa are unbelievably huge markets. And yes, customers there could buy cheaper products from other companies, but they could also buy pre-owned Nokia phones as well (most phones in the developing world are bought pre-owned).

AT&T Hires Goldman to Advise on EchoStar Buyout - TheStreet
The WSJ blog DealJournal said that this was just a rumor and that AT&T had not hired Goldman Sachs for this deal. So who is correct? Also, if this deal is just a rumor, will DirecTV be back in the running for EchoStar? Research seems to indicate that AT&T has a slight corporate advantage over DirecTV www.newsvisual.com/new... , and AT&T has been on a buying spree lately as it tries to expand into different telecommunications mediums. So is the deal on or off?

Genzyme Jumps on Positive Test Results, Takeover Rumors
It's interesting that rumors of Pfizer making moves against both Biogen and Genzyme came out the same day. Which would be a better deal? In my opinion Genzyme is the better fit. It seems to have a higher growth potential and the recent success of its new MS drug is great news to investors. It also doesn't hurt that many of the execs at both Pfizer and Genzyme are on the faculty at Harvard Medical School www.newsvisual.com/new... , making initial negotiations fairly easy. As far as Biogen goes, Pfizer might be interested, but then they would have to go up against Carl Icahn. However it is possible that Icahn could support a takeover of Biogen by Pfizer.

Analysts Give BEA Scant Hope For Alternative To Oracle Bid
I thought the original offer from Oracle was more than fair. I understand that BEA was undervalued, but it wasn't that undervalued. Looks like I was right. Now Oracle has some room to wiggle as far as offers go. BEA may pay because of their recalcitrance. Carl Icahn's goal is to sell BEA. Oracle may just offer a bit lower price now and BEA may not have a choice but to accept it. If BEA balks corporate ties could be used to pressure BEA www.newsvisual.com/new... .

Pfizer Joins Up With Medical Social-Networking Site
Anyone hear anything else on the possibility that Pfizer may challenge Carl Icahn for Biogen? The WSJ and NYT both had articles on it this morning. As far as corporate relations go, it seems that Pfizer could give Icahn a run for his money www.newsvisual.com/new... , but I don't know how long they could hold out. Icahn's reputation for turning both companies and management around is just too good.

      Citigroup Earnings Preview
While the collective experience of the Board at Citi is very impressive (here is a map of their BOD www.newsvisual.com/new... ), some drastic changes are necessary. The fact that all of these institutions allowed themselves to get dragged into the subprime mess in the first place should set off warning bells. I agree with the author, a bad 4th-quarter and heads will roll.

McDonald’s Q3 Forecasts Well Ahead of Estimates
Over 30% of Americans are obese and McD's manages to post numbers like these. Well, I don't eat there but bravo to their management. You have to admire them for putting up numbers like that in today's increasingly anti-fast food culture. Although to be fair, they have been trying to change their menu. No wonder every business school makes you study McDonald's management www.newsvisual.com/new...
