Happy New Year!
2014 may not be kind to equities. Caution for most investors.
Great Year for traders!
YEAR OF THE BEARS - 2014!
After following the markets for years, I started actively managing my portfolio in 2010. Plenty of misteps and a few victories have brought me to the point of wanting to share my experiences and gather feedback from this community.
I'm still learning the more advanced strategies for options and currently investigating futures trading, I want to bring my perspective to the investing world and hopefully generate some alpha along the way.
I tend to focus on a few names at a time to determine their trading patterns before intitating anything. I've learned that patience is a virtue and to not rush into trades. There are always more opportunities though I still struggle with "the trade that got away" syndrome on my darker days.
I hope anyone reading my articles is able to get some valuable information out my opinions and experience, and maybe a chuckle once in a while.
Chris DeMuth Jr. is the founder of Rangeley Capital LLC. Rangeley is an investment firm that focuses on event driven, value-oriented investment opportunities. Rangeley Capital and his value investing forum, Sifting the World (StW), search the world for misplaced bets. Rangeley exploits them for its investors and then Mr. DeMuth writes about them on StW.
I am an active husband, father, lawyer (more than 24 years, how time flies), and investor. I believe in contrarian investing, i.e., going where the crowd isn't. I believe that successful investing, like successful living, requires equal parts listening and evaluating, followed by independent decision making.
I have been an active investor for almost 20 years. My main focus is on high-yield stocks, particularly MLPs, and high-growth oil companies in the Eagle Ford shale. I have a portion of my portfolio allocated to short-term trading, with a focus on over-reactions to company news and directional plays on VIX-based ETFs. I am happy to answer just about any question sent my way, especially from those new to the stock market.
I call myself the Random Investor because I don't intend to limit myself in any way. I choose stocks to review the way I choose books to read (and I read A LOT) - whatever catches my eye. Might be an interesting piece of news, might be a product I like, might be I like the competition, could be something Cramer said. (I like him on Squawk on the Street, not so much on Mad Money.)
Full disclosure: I have no positions in any individual stocks and do not intend to initiate any in the next six months.
I am a swing trader and position trader. My bread and butter are the emerging markets and biotech. My forte are small cap, micro cap, and undervalued companies. The bulk of my investments are speculative for the huge risk/reward potentials, mainly small/micro cap biotech companies. The remainder of my investments are Latin American equities and real estate and various other emerging market equities. Short term investing for explosive growth/upside to fund for longer term investing that will provide steady growth/reinvesting over the years. I commute back and forth from Buenos Aires, Argentina where my wife and kids live, to Washington DC, USA, where I work. Investing long term for my new born princess, Angelique, and my beautiful family who are my heart and soul <3
I am a Blue-Collar worker that has been investing for over twenty years. I will invest across all types of investments: Tech, growth, dividends, bonds, & options. I believe that people can invest on their own and in due time can build a portfolio of stocks that will easily surpass many mutual fund pros. With a little bit of learning and practicing good investment ideas, along with action, there is no way to avoid being wealthy.
