    same thing can be said for console games. only a small percentage of gamers will play a game because of brand loyalty. Valve or blizzard have brand loyalty. Most gamers really care about the game itself. Look at how Eidos was hated for a while following a Kane and Lynch controversy yet it didnt matter when Batman Arkam Asylum was released. So yeah brand loyalty has never been an issue for any company besides a few lucky studios. Activision has call of duty to release year after year. Zynga has their farmville and poker to keep making money off of.

    All entertainment assets for gaming companies is short except for a few special titles and games that are in the MMO space. Online gaming is crowded but they are at the top of the game.

    what you say are two extremes. Either make hits or fold. Not true. Really you just have to make profit.. not hits. You dont need innovation in games either. Just like movies, you just do remakes or sequels to turn a profit.

    why would you say " It seems Zynga has realized they are not an innovative game maker and need to turn towards alternatives for revenue. " When it seems like they taking their 7 million players DAU for the poker game and possibly funneling them to real gambling?

    lay offs are quite common in the game industry. Canceled projects usually result in layoffs rather than keeping them around idle waiting for the next project .

    do any of those companies have the developers? unlikely also. There is a huge shortage of qualified developers, that is why zynga has been scooping up game studios.. not so much for their product, but for their headcount.

Also, chief mobile officer David Ko has been named COO, replacing the recently-departed John Schappert; business development head Barry Cottle has been named chief revenue officer; and gaming exec Steven Chiang has been named president of games.
