Netflix User Statistics: Reading Between the Numbers
Netflix queue should be smarter. I would like to be able to "subscribe" to a series within it so that whenever I returned, for example, a disc of Star Trek The Next Generation or Absolutely Fabulous or whatever, it would recognize it as a series and send me the next one in the series, instead of whatever was at the top of the queue. As it is we have to juggle our queue a lot. But even so Netflix is so convenient compared to video store that we would pay a premium. I look forward to calculating what that is.

Has Whole Foods Lost Touch with Its Customers?
We have a local chain called Market of Choice that is very successful with exactly the model suggested here -- high-end organic and conventional foods offered side by side, plus inexpensive store-brand staples. Unlike WF it also emphasizes locally grown and produced foods and calls them out when it has them. I would love to see WFMI results broken out by metro area (ha) -- I bet other areas have similar nimbler competitors.

However, since the nearest commercial airport is 2 hours' drive away in Portland, I can understand the appeal of being able to fly out of Eugene.

Crude Oil Seeks Iranian Black Swan
Uh, Hook. The official line of the Bush administration is that "huge intelligence failures" are what caused the US to go to war in Iraq even though Saddam had no WMD. One might debate the merits of this claim, but calling it "anti-Bush rhetoric" is just woefully uninformed.

On Pump Points for Politicians: 'Gapitem' by Presidency, Congress
I think there may be an editing error here. The explanation of "gapitem" is clear but then we get not a bunch of gapitem scores, but, apparently, some sort of GDP growth scores adjusted for gapitem growth. It's like a couple of lines explaining the adjustment are left out, or the headline maybe isn't best.

Why would any U.S. market go up with a McCain victory? He is going to continue all the same great policies that got us where we are now.

GlaxoSmithKline's Cutbacks Should Come as No Surprise
PU you may well be right. But I think Derek's point is that in this kind of situation, there are always lots of people saying that kind of thing, regardless of how right or wrong it is. It's practically impossible for an outside observer to sort out.

To the extent that the shareholders are outside observers, they are very likely to agree with Derek.

I always thought a "bubble" was by definition unsustainable. Which means that it's unsustainable whether or not some genius shorts it. Was there a way to short tulip bulbs?

CKE Restaurants Enacts 'Poison Pill' Defense: Takeover Brewing?
Only improvement I can suggest to this good article is that I had to go look up who the Sam Hill is CKE Restaurants. They run Carl's Jr. hamburger fast-food chain and Hardee's (I think this is also hamburgers, I'm pretty sure it's regional chain in the South).

Jeez. Apparently all 10 people who still believe the canard that "cutting taxes increases tax revenue" have shown up right here to post all over the place while citing NO sources, NO proof.

If you're going to use an ugly slur like "camel jockey" you might as well at least spell it right. And making fun of "Mecca U." is cowardly crap. What do you know about higher education in the Middle East? Apparently nothing.
