  • SA author Emerging Money is worried for the mining sector following Caterpillar's (CAT) Q1 earning report, in which the company said it expects sales of its traditional mining machines to fall 50% in 2013. "What might be scary to think about" is that "commodity prices are actually still quite high," Emerging Money says. "This tells me it could get much uglier as well." I'm going to go out on a limb and speculate that the world will still be using commodities three years from now.

Assuming that's true, someone will need to get them out of the ground. CAT will be supplying a fair share of the equipment used for that purpose.

I'm a buyer of CAT at these levels and will buy more if it drops further. I'm willing to go to zero with CAT

    Lionel is correct.

Much of the world demand comes from India,China, Latin America, and other such places.

Obama might be doing all you say,but the real drivers for gold are elsewhere.

  • Natural Gas: Last Month's Rally Review And Near-Term Outlook [View article]
Here in California there is already an unanticipated consequence of the governor's insistence on increasing solar/wind.

The unpredictable outages due to low wind or low sun conditions, coupled with the fairly sizable share of power production from those two sources,is now requiring much more investment in backup generation, such as gas peakers, which are much more expensive than baseload.

In any event, there is not enough solar or wind resource on the planet to make a significant dent in total energy demand.

Engineered Geothermal Systems (EGS) could supplant all of that, including fossil fuels, but that is years away.

In the major bear market of the 1980's gold dropped from 880 to about 100. so there's really no telling where it might go. if it were a commodity driven by logic rather than emotion,it might be possible to guesstimate, but that isn't the case.

if low grade mines are shut down, the average grade of the remaining mines will go up,thereby lowering the cost of production.

i was just looking at mxi.

according to the ishares page, bhp represents 6.22% of the etf, and bbl 3.50%.

this is strange: the two stocks are the same company,so they shouldn't double up the weighting in the etf. also,if they insist on keeping both, they should maintain percentages which are the same.

Does anyone have info as to what hedging actions the producers are doing now?

If they locked in at $4.00,for example,it doesn't matter where prices go.

I've had pretty bad results with the contra-etf's. Usually they don't move enough, and sometimes they don't even move in the right direction.

over the longer term,of course,is the decay problem. overall, I've given up on them.

their half-year financial report is encouraging, imho.

Considering all that's going on,BHP/BBL is doing quite well. Ebitda covered 20% of total liabilities in only six months, which puts them in the upper tier of companies in terms of financial strength.

Even after the big drop in the last few days, six-month ebitda was only 8% of market cap (six months). that would indicate the stock is still fairly expensive, especially in view of what's going on with their main commodities.

So I wouldn't be surprised if the stock drops further. In which case I'm a buyer.

I assume INTC management is well aware of what's going on in their world and will react. They've shown in the past they can manage through the minefields. I've traded intc for 12+ years, and have done very well. I sold a bit at 22.19 on Thursday, will sell more if it goes up more, buy some. Right now I'm buying a tad more than I sell,so am accumulating.

I've been a buyer of APA and see that it's at another 52-week low today (4/19).

In your opinion, why is apa so weak? Is it only Egypt?

From what I can see,if apa were to give the Egyptian operations away for zero, the stock would still be undervalued.
