Is Microsoft Really Such a Compelling Buy?
"however, that CEO Steve Ballmer is adamantly opposed to even considering this."

Yes, ego is what does scare me as their previous success would lead to strong feelings; nevertheless, a flat 5-year stock price has possibly brought some people back down to earth.

"Microsoft to continue to show strong cash flow growth for a couple more years, but after that, we think growth will get a lot more challenging."

This is where your imagination fails you.

Can We Take Microsoft at Its Open Source Word?
Really? Exactly what doors are closed to OSS?

I thought you OSS people hated MSFT because of all the doors that are closed to you due to MSFT dirty tricks. Now you appear to be saying OSS developers have nothing to complain about; all doors are wide open to OSS. This makes no sense; you MSFT bashers need to get on the same page. You're never going to win an election if you keep changing your platform. No pun on changing platform.

Microsoft... they desperately need to widen their influence on the net

This is true for all technology companies.

Quote: "establish a net based free office suite that can be used with open source server software, then Microsoft will be left on the downhill slide."
I'm not clear why this is new? Anyone is free to offer competing software...It use to be called public domain now it's called open source.
You hit the nail on the head when you said "If..." because with a few "If..." comments about microsoft's potential future moves, Google would be left on the sidelines. The bias is so thick it can be cut with a knife.

"it has been employing dirty tricks to seal its products off."

they tried to make a buck, actually a few billion; isn't this also the goal of its competitors. Unless you're recommending socialism.

I'll expect to soon read an article from this author flattering GOOG for securing an almost monopolisitic position in its space.

@My take: Independent thinker and Windows XP? How do those two go together?
A perfect example of the fully empty arguments that microsoft opponents offer. This tells me the debate is already lost and MSFT has won.

      Apple's Extraordinary Edge
I can't join the choir of Apple being an exceptional company just like I can't join the choir of the equally foolish description of microsoft as a bloated competitor in a crumbling castle. I am knocked over from all the emotion, but the marketplace does not support the above described views. In 10 years, Apple's world domination will be just around the corner, just like it was 10 years ago. There will also be the argument that Microsoft negotiated its position rather than earned it with technology. The world has reinvented itself and microsoft remains; this reflects more than smoked filled room negotiations.

Microsoft Be Warned: IBM Boards the Open Source Software Express
IBM is embracing Open Source because IBM is in too weak of a market position to even attempt to sell proprietary software. Oh, how the mighty have fallen down the mountain they originally created, and how hard some try to spin the collapse.
P.S. thanks for mentioning Lotus; it was a flashback to the latter 80's and the peanut PC, Charlie Chaplin commercials, etc.

Microsoft Using XP to Stay Relevant in Emerging Markets
Microsoft knows that many customers would give too much weight to the initial purchase cost rather than the cost over a product's lifetime. Initial cost savings that are moved to lost productivity due to inferior software is a strategy that managers would embrace when they go the 'free' software. Microsoft is dealing with this reality.

      Can Microsoft Handle Facebook?
Microsoft went deep into the details of their expertise. Microsoft demonstrated to Facebook they had more expertise to offer. If it were only a matter of writing a check, Microsoft would win every time. Your argument doesn't hold up. If all it took to successfully compete was a big checking account than inherited wealth would never be lost.
