Fixed Income ETFs: When You Need Lower Risk
      Great points, Gary.

We've been in PCY for about 4 months in both ROTHs...Great income, and great price stability. Volume's light, but I haven't had much difficulty buying what we wanted...

GE Has Been Woeful, Go For a Sector ETF Instead
"...and it's not going to screw up again."

How could you *possibly* say this with conviction - where's your evidence?

"...it's a lot safer with as much upside potential as any ETF on the screen..."

I think I've done much better YTD with a number of ETFs on *my* screen...And I'm not talking about double shorts!

I'm sorry, but if you don't like Roger's statements, a purely subjective discussion enumerating the same points we hear throughout the day on Bloomberg & CNBC isn't going to get folks into the company.

Yes - much appreciated. And we aren't forgetting that you have considered Brazil, India, and (ghasp!) China in the past, as well...

      Thanks!

      Nice article, Julia.

More to the nature of the investment side of this story, I have difficulty determining what will serve as a catalyst for moving CBS' stock price...Without some tricks up its sleeve - not to mention an ability to carve out greater market share with its programing - I fear that CBS will roll over without having really gone anywhere.

A Low Cost, Fully Diversified All ETF Portfolio
I agree with LSGuy - If I'd recommended 30% bonds to some of the 30-ish and 40-ish folks I work with, they'd have been displeased with my modeling. For some folks this might be fine, given average-low risk tolerance, or unique circumstances. However, I'm curious as to how you came up with that figure.

I'm not disputing your picks, though - we also own VWO, VTI, and PCY...

I'm curious to learn what your results were when you backtested with different allocations - say, 75% equities, 15% reits, and 10% bonds (and associated other derivations).

      Best,
      GL

Indeed - very nice. DBV is a useful tool. And I agree that it'd be an asset class unto itself.

If we get different CurrencyShares-like offerings in the near future - such as the Brazilian Real, HK Dollar, and PRC Yuan - those, too, will provide useful options to etf investors.

Readers should also be aware of another Middle Eastern option, though it is not an etf. T.Rowe Price's Africa/Middle East mutual fund, which does not invest nearly as heavily in South Africa as does SPDR's GAF, gets investors - at just less than triple the fee of GAF (60bps) - honest exposure into UAE, Egypt, Qatar, and Oman. Some of us use this fund as a partial proxy on the frontier markets less their Asian representatives.

You Said It Was A Bear Market - Not Me
      Hello, Internet2k4,

I might not be Roger, but I can say that DXD and FXP have proved very useful hedges in our portfolios, as well. SRS, if you're interested in considering the trials and tribulations of the housing market, has also been a lucrative investment.

When building strategy outside of our core holdings, I'll definitely consider appropriate investments in shorts, always as a function on my feeling for the long side we're taking.

      Roger,

I'd sure like to consider PBP a little more closely, but with 600 shares traded (and a spread of $0.18) as of 2.23pm on Thursday, 01.17.08, it's not exactly liquid, is it?!

      Best,

      Early Morning Musing: Correlations Rising?
      Brad,

Interesting article - I appreciate seeing the data. Statistically speaking, however, it is difficult to call a trend, or any expressed significance, with two years of data. Certainly there is the possibility of a defensible trend but two data points - even out of 15-20 - don't reveal enough direction.

In fact, I'm more impressed - in the spirit of your article's theme - by the absolute values of the reversals from '91-'92 (21.52%) and '97-'98 (25.96%). I wonder if, during those years, folks pondered a similar sentiment (that commodities were no longer as decorrelated).

      Best,
      Geoff L
