    two problems with this presentation

    - GE of old does not equate to the new GE, since they continually shed and acquire businesses

    - GE aviation does not equate to GE stock

While negotiating, deadlines are dead lines and final terms are anything but.

Unlike the French government, GE does not face any pressure from its constituents to consummate this deal, this fact alone should work to its advantage, so GE should announce only agreements and refuse to comment on terms.

This whole news-media circus is for consumption by the French populace, no reason for shareholders to get their juices flowing here.

Those who want to keep their assets overseas should be allowed to do so, provided they forfeit all the advantages of being US citizens and agree to pay back-taxes and penalties

Those who want to continue to operate inside US, citizens or not, should face the same taxes and penalties for violating US laws

  • The Implications of a Downgraded U.S. [View article]
why hasnt any one focused on the role US plays in the world ? US is the de-facto peace-keeper and arbiter of IRAQ, AFGHANISTAN, LIBYA, ,,, god alone knows where all this will stop.

Globalization should and does mean bring down the standard of living to the average.

The concept of a well-funded health-care for the non-working, free housing for those who cannot afford it, playing policeman abroad, fighting a war against terrorists, all these grandiose ideas have a price. Sam, UNCLE SAM, there is no free lunch. Oops, I should've said, nephew, NEPHEW, there is no free lunch, get to work and produce more !

My children earn and spend all they can, giving little thought to saving. I have 2 grand-kids 0 + 5 year olds, they have no concept of money. I have just started on a DIGR portfolio for their college fund. For my part, I hope my little contribution will be put to good use.

  • The Obama administration releases its final fuel efficiency standards for cars and trucks, requiring each automaker's fleet to reach an average 54.5 miles/gallon by 2025, nearly doubling current levels. To meet the standard, automakers will need to introduce new technologies and sell more alternative fuel vehicles. Critics say the rules will add thousands to new car prices[View news story]
Personally I am for clean air, clean water, sustainable energy sufficiency. How are we going to achieve that, or are we arguing agianst this vision ?

Is there a difference in our "war on cancer" propounded by GWH Bush and the "efficiency mandate" by Barrack Obama. All past presidents , having the pulpit, lay out a vision for our country. It is up to the successor administrations to set priorities and specific goals.

The vision for clean-air is not a new vision, Obama is not giving us a new mandate, the EPA is not a new agency and ECAFE is not a new mechanism. This country , on its own, must adopt a sustainable energy plan and develop technologies to support that plan.

One option is to use our tremendous military might and keep invading foreign countries with plentiful oil - been there , done that, they hate us.

Another alternative is to exploit all known reserves in US, damn the consequences and effects on the environment. Been there, done that, Exxon Valdez - Alaska, BP - Gulf of Mexico. Disaster.

Thanks for this article. I was wandering about their exposure to interest rates since they keep paying out those huge dividends . At these prices, I am reluctant to buy additional shares.

Jim Cramer ? who is that ? Long SDRL.

  • The Supreme Court healthcare opinion: The individual mandate survives as a tax. You can read the full opinion here.  [View news story]
lol lol - we have a bipolar nation to say the least, a breakup will be an interesting experiment.

The majority elected Obama ( as they did George W Bush 8 years earlier and Bill Clinton 8 years prior)

What Obama inherited was the mess Bush left us with, an economy in shambles, the Bank institutions had plundered the wealth of small investor and we the taxpayers footed the bill. Now Obama has done his part in creating his mess - the health care bill.

Both the conservatives and the liberals have expressed themselves resoundingly. Th populace will go to the polls. The outcome will be decided by the centrist leaning majority and we will find out hcih party will get the mandate to fix the old mess and to make a new mess.

My opinion is that four years are too long, this country is too big and the federal government has too much power. A breakup of the nation will mollify extremists or at least relegate them to inidividual states. Lets call this new union ASU instead of USA

Funny thing is the European model does not work either.

  • Boeing: Stabilizing Operating Margins Through Timed R&D Expenses? [View article]
I am not sure how to read the author's statement

"The growth in dividends feels too large. To me, it feels like the company may have run out of good things to invest in.

If they are paying that money out in dividends, I don't think they will have enough money left to fund the growth needed to justify the stock price."

  • Apple iWatch To Ignite Quantified Healthcare Revolution [View article]
It is too early to predict the outcome. There are many other competitors in the same field. Apple's advantage in this field is very specific - integration of data using an apple device (you can substitute the name Apple and you can get similar results). It remains to be see if the users will adopt this new appliance enthusiastically. The younger generation does not need it but is known to be early adopters. The older generation probably needs it most, but is still struggling with older iphone, ipad, etc.

Even though I am long AAPL, I am on the sidelines on this one.

regardless of Dodd-Frank, I do not trust reporting by big corporations - the collapse of MF Global, the cover up at JPMorgan and the under-capitalization at BAC are just some of the recent examples which drive me crazy - where are the internal controls ?

I think "communicating" is not the real goal here, I would like to use the term "experience sharing", which then leads to improved learning. Coupled with instant feedback, the possibilities are tremendous. I think Mark sees them, to me it is a matter of whose technology will take us there, sooner or later. The question is no longer how.
