  • Apple Is Acquiring A Fad - Not Quality - And That Is Troubling [View article]
    @Paulo

I think people underestimate the value of the connections that Jimmy I and Dr. Dre have within the industry with regards to music rights. That is value added.

As you stated the price is not a problem. Apple does about 1B per week in revenue (pay this off in 3 weeks) and Beats is a very profitable business. With Apple putting the brand front and centre in their stores, this business could be accretive to Apple's bottom line within 24 months.

One last thing, almost every popular athlete wears these headphones in the locker room and when they're getting off the bus before games. I suspect you'll see an Apple logo on them somewhere before too long, which will work as free advertising. http://bit.ly/1sake5k (So, the skull candy comparison doesn't really hold)

It may not be the kind of sexy acquisition that people were looking for (dropbox?) but it won't be the kind write down disaster that Motorola was.

  • Apple Is Acquiring A Fad - Not Quality - And That Is Troubling [View article]
One thing that people seem to be ignoring is that Beats is a highly profitable business. They did over 1.3 billion in revenue last year.

This seems like something Angela Ahrendts may want. Beats are already in the Apple Store but I would imagine that they will take a much more prominent role once the apple design team has had their hands on them.

Plus, expect beats to be wireless within six months, probably smart headphones that connect to a smart watch for joggers.

  • Strong Revenue Growth Predicted, Tesla Unlikely To Drop To $180 Post-Earnings [View article]
Is may 1st recent enough for you?

Musk was launching rockets. So, all the recent news has been about his other company, SpaceX.

    http://nbcnews.to/RrFx71

Tesla Earnings will hinge on sales in China (which will be super strong - http://bit.ly/RrFtnN )

And they will hinge on american sales, which may be soft. I see more and more Teslas every day (and I don't live in california) but that's anecdotal information.

  • LinkedIn beats by $0.04, beats on revenue [View news story]
Whoever wrote this may want to double check things. I'm pretty sure they didn't miss by 466 billion dollars. And their revenues aren't down 99% year over year unless their revs were 473 billion last year.

Instead of buying stock, they should buy Motorola for 12 billion and then sell it for 3 billion, two years later.

  • Apple Q2 Review And Q3 Outlook [View article]
    @ Jack Baker

Your sentiment about China is one that I've shared for a long time. Apple holding single digit market share in the middle kingdom is an opportunity, not a failure. I would worry about Apple's future profits if they already held the lead in marketshare, but they don't. Their addressable market is enormous and their success in Japan indicates that they can be a big player in the far east. With their growth in China finally beginning, I suspect we will see record iPhone sales every quarter for a sustained period of time.

The revenue beat was much larger than 120 million. 45.65 billion vs 43.53. That's over 2 billion.

  • Twitter A Risk, But A Calculated Risk [View article]
This isn't a serious question is it?

If twitter wanted to "make money" (I assume you mean profits) they could do so tomorrow, and in a major way. Instead, they are trying to grow the business in order to "make more money" in the long run. If you can't understand that, I suggest you find another line of work, Bryan.

  • How To Know When To Short Apple [View article]
    Michael Blair,

We've had our battles on this site before but I feel the need to come to your defence today. Please ignore the people who want to have you blocked. If they don't want to hear countervailing opinions, they don't need to click on the link. Today's title should have been clear enough evidence of this article's contents.

Regarding the article, best one of yours that I've read in a while. Unit sales will be a far more telling number than the old "market share" canard.

Here's the reason why I think apple goes higher and won't succumb to the same fate as RIM or Nokia:
Apple owns the most valuable portion (expensive end) of the most valuable business in the world (mobile computing). It's product is the single most important product that a human being owns (with the exception of medicine in some cases). Because the mobile computer is the single most important thing that a person owns, people will always be willing to pay a premium to get the best one.

Unlike google (which is an advertising company) or Microsoft (which is a business software company) Apple devotes all of its time a resources into making this one product the best it can be. And, it's smart to do so.

    Best of luck MB,
    Samuel

PS. Can't wait to get an iPhone 6 with a bigger screen. If the 6 doesn't have a bigger screen, I might sell my shares.

  • iPhones 80% Of China's Premium Smartphone Market? Don't Believe It [View article]
    Mr. Blair,

Based on the China mobile numbers: 1.3 million 4G subscribers in February, approximately 1 million of which were iPhones. If we assume that 4G phones are in the expensive category then apple won about 75% of China mobile's portion of the expensive segment in February, no?

    Best,

    SK

  • New BlackBerry Smartphones Signal Shift In Focus To Enterprise Services And BBM [View article]
WhatsApp garnered $40 per user because it already had 450 million users and was growing its base by a million users a day. By the end of this year, that total will be closer to $25 per user.

BBM gained half its users by opening the service up to iOS and Android. Since blackberry can't sell phones anymore and they can't open up the service to any other platforms why the hell would FB or anyone else pay the $40 premium for BBM users?

If Chen can get 1 billion for BBM it will be a miracle.

  • Facebook rallies: Needham bullish, Zuck talks, WhatsApp to offer VoIP [View news story]
    @jcurranz

In my understanding, you don't pay per click when you advertise on Facebook, you pay per impression. Cost per click is more of a google metric. Ads on Facebook help companies build a brand, whereas ads in response to a google search actually bring customers to the point of sale.
