PHEVs and EVs: Plugging into a Lump of Coal [View article]
What about people who have solar panels on their roof and generate all their own electricity? These are going to be the kind of people who first buy electric cars and PHEV like the Volt. You're making a big assumption that people who buy these vehicles will all get their power from the grid.

All this guy does anymore is bash companies like GM and Nissan, apparently two companies he's not invested in.
Your thoughts are appreciated, but might be respected a little more if you weren't writing the SAME THING on this web site every other day!
Who knows if the PHEV technology will eventually be a success or not, but you are clearly rooting for it to fail before it's even begun! I for one am rooting for GM and others to win on this one because they're actually doing something that's in the country's interests and trying to get us off of foreign oil.
So the DOE says that those are the numbers of electric cars that are going to be on the roads? I suppose they are going to be 100% correct then, huh? Is this the same agency that claims that by 2030 the world will be consuming 120 million barrels of oil/day, up from the 85 million we currently use? Because I don't really think those numbers are possible, and just because the DOE predicts we're going to have X amount of electric vehicles on the road in the future doesn't mean they are right.
I don't know much about most of these small companies that make prototype electric cars. I suspect that most of those will fail to even get to production. But GM is going forward with the Volt, and I don't see anything that is going to stop it. They are in the process of eliminating virtually every other brand they have, but nothing has been cut from the Volt program. I know most of the readers here like to bash GM, and most of it is deserved, but they are following through with this car, even if it's the only car they produce after (if) they go through bankruptcy.
I have to disagree with the author in saying that the electric car is a scam. Surely some other forms of vehicles will have to develop in the next 50 years, there is just not enough oil to keep up with the growing demand for cars. It might be some form of plug in hybrid electric, or some advanced biodisel, or perhaps some other technology, but 50 years from now we surely won't have 100% of the vehicles on the road be regular gasoline engines like it is now.

What about PGF: the PowerShares Financial Preferred ETF? This thing yields about 8% and is only down about 1.2% ytd, compared to -30% or so for XLF. I just discovered it today and I'm looking into it for my IRA, if anyone has any opinions on PGF, please feel free to share.
