Novozymes, Genecor: Investing in Cellulosic Ethanol
Beyond these two pink sheet listed stocks, another option is Dyadic International (DIL) that I mentioned in this blog entry last April.

I have been watching this highly volatile stock for months now but remain uncertain about its prospects.

Special Dividends Not All That Special
Thanks for the hint Saul. The drop is usually on the ex-dividend date and not the distribution date. However in both the special dividends discussed in this post, the ex-dividend date was the day <b>after</b&g... the distribution and hence the price adjustment happened right after the dividend was paid.

Thanks for mentioning the typo. I have fixed it on the SINLetter blog.

Regarding shorting a stock that includes a special dividend, I would think that just like any other dividend you would have to pay the dividend or the broker might adjust your cost basis. We would need someone who has done this before to comment to confirm exactly what happens. As an alternative, you could try shorting HMA and find out for yourself.

Why Is Intel Pushing WiMAX? Three Theories
Interesting thoughts Andrew. For WiMax to work, three things have to come together. The service providers, the equipment manufacturers and an integrated chipset that supports the mobile WiMax or 802.16e standard.

Service Providers in the US: While Clearwire is targeting the consumer space of the market, another service provider TowerStream is targeting the business sector. Sprint is expected to spend $1 billion on WiMax in 2007.

Equipment Manufacturers: Beyond pure play companies like Airspan Networks, Alvarion, Aperto Networks and Redline Communications, larger companies like Motorola, Samsung and Alcatel-Lucent are investing in WiMax as well.

As Larry suggested, the integrated chipset, a variation of the Centrino platform is where Intel comes in and this will be a key component in the adoption of mobile WiMax.

I am quite bullish on the prospects of WiMax in 2007 and have added both Airspan (a little early) and Alvarion to my personal portfolio and the SINLetter model portfolio.

      Sandisk: Solid Long-Term Holding
Bern, here is an update I wrote about SanDisk in my December newsletter,

<i>"SanDisk appears to be slashing prices on its flash cards, USB drives and MP3 players based on aggressive rebates and price cuts I have seen at Office Depot and Costco over the last few days. While this might increase market share and revenue, it could hurt earnings in the fourth quarter just like it did in the third quarter. However I like the long-term prospects of SanDisk and see this current weakness as a buying opportunity. On the positive side, while Microsoft's (MSFT) new Zune MP3 player did not even make it to the top 50 Amazon.com bestsellers in the electronics category, two SanDisk Sansa MP3 players made it to the top 15. I picked up SanDisk for my personal portfolio and plan to continue holding it in the model portfolio."</i...

      Pfizer Moat Check Is Positive
George, while I was bullish on Pfizer last December and chose it as my dogs of the dow pick for 2006, I am not very convinced this is the right time to start a position in Pfizer. The company had indicated that earnings will be flat over the next two years even before the clinical trials for Torcetrapib failed. Along with some of the other major pharama companies, Pfizer faces a record number of patent expirations as evidenced by the additional 148 applications for generic drugs filed with the FDA by Teva Pharmaceutical. Teva also has over 1,000 applications pending approval in Europe.

I do like the dividend yield of Pfizer and the fact that the company is fighting generic competition on its own turf through its Greenstone Ltd subsidiary, which happened to launch the generic version of Zoloft at the same time as Teva.

I am currently long Pfizer but probably not for very long.

      Hi Luciano,

I am not sure if you are allowed to talk about the 31 new ETFs that are yet to be launched. I was interested in learning more about the "India Total Dividend Fund".

Is this ETF based on an existing index?

      WisdomTree: Riding the ETF Wave
Byrne is absolutely right. I messed up and that was a major oversight. I should have used a different valuation method based on the amount Amvescap paid for PowerShares.

The 25% profit margin was based on the margins of GBL and GROW. I did acknowledge that these margins may be too high for a startup when I wrote:

"Please note that it is possible that WisdomTree may not even be profitable, as many new companies tend to utilize every dollar available to grow the business at the expense of earnings".

Thanks for the information about making money from lending Dan. I will have to explore that theory.

Getting Ready to Go Long SanDisk
While I doubt full flash drives will appear in laptops anytime soon, I am very encouraged by their new line of Sandisk Sansa MP3 players, which I mentioned in my <b>blog entry about RealNetworks</b>...

The price per megabyte is likely to drop much faster than the price of their MP3 players and hence I agree with Phil that this drop is a buying opportunity after this falling knife hits starts quivering.

Mattel: Watch Elmo Laugh All The Way To The Bank
Paul, as I recently mentioned in my newsletter, Mattel has quite a few strengths beyond the newly launched T.M.X Elmo.

      www.sinletter.com/arch...

I am tickled by your assertion that <i>"it's not unreasonable to believe that this is a relatively low margin toy due to the shocking amount of engineering involved"</i&g... Based on past Elmos and the vast number of other toys that Mattel makes, I would think that most of the "engineering"... already existed in-house. If Mattel sells a large number of these Elmos (they sold <b>250,000</b... on the very first day), it will actually turn out to be a high margin toy for them.

Not Yet Enough Focus on Commodities For a True Bubble To Have Formed
William, I did read Stephen Roach's statement a couple of days ago and while he might be right about "froth" in the commodities market, I believe that he might be a little early in calling an end to the commodity bull market.

However I do not buy the argument <i>"valuati... in the bull-market sector reach huge premiums"<i>... While this may be true of certain sectors (the internet and alternative energy sectors come to mind), it is not universally true. When steel stocks usually reach the peak of their cycle, their valuations appear very low and they tend to sport single digit P/Es. The same could be said of the housing sector.

When I made a negative call on the housing sector last September and then did a follow up blog post in May 2006 titled Housing Sector In Pain, some homebuilders had single digit P/Es and most of them had a P/E below the average P/E of the S&amp;P 500.
