  • All Aboard The Money Train: Himax Technologies [View article]
there are risks in small cap, for sure. But, to me the multiple lines of revenue (not just displays but 4K TV) and nice dividend that appears to be covered make this small cap less risky than others claiming similar PEG's.

long HIMX and other risky small caps all doing better than my large cap holding for the month of January...

  • IBM: A Critical Year In 2015 [View article]
I would rather IBM uses the R&D and many patents to create actionable products that create growth rather than buying growth through acquisitions or buying stock. But, if they must do one of the later I would like them to buy companies with stock when its relatively over valued and buy back stock when it is relatively under valued. 2015 starts with it being relatively undervalued.

it would be interesting to see a breakdown of revenue by acquisition. Like INTC buying a security company and not seeing much revenue from it (yet?) I wonder if IBM is better off buying stock than more bolt on acquisitions that get lost in the cloud of IBM.

off topic, but I have always wondered what sort of start up costs a hedge fund has. Also, do you have to have a certification or is it just advised that you should? ...just curious...

good article on INTC. I am excited by their opportunities.

  • Illustrating Why I Choose To Invest In IBM Again [View article]
I own DE that I purchased at $76 a couple years ago.
I like DE and am not selling, but I will not purchase DE until it drops to around $76 again. I do not expect a rebound without a rebound in corn prices. While Prices of corn, wheat, soybean and cotton may go up, they traditionally go down at Harvest time and peak near planting if we have weather scares. I will be looking at DE again in late summer/ early fall.

the catalyst is the price of commodities and the housing/ construction going up. We will first see it in a firming of the used machinery market. At least, that is my thesis for them.

With IBM I am at a loss to come up with a thesis. A thesis would be: IBM is likely to benefit from ________ and that is likely to see increased demand due to _________. Can you help me fill in the blanks?

  • Illustrating Why I Choose To Invest In IBM Again [View article]
I keep thinking IBM, maybe. But first, what else is there to invest in. In regards to cheaper, I immediately think MU. Micron is cheaper with a PE of around 8 forward looking. No dividend, though.

If you require a dividend, then XOM and COP are attractive and have lower PE's There ability to grow is no different than IBM.

    DE is cheap, too.

so, what catalyst makes IBM a better buy?

  • Google: Is The Future Gloomy? [View article]
I think Googl is cursed with too much margin. Seems like a curse we all should invest in, but it allows for the company to be soft on expense and invest in marginal or even questionable ROIC ideas. It does not create discipline in R&D.

So, as a result, Google invests in all sorts of pie in the sky things that diverts funds away from shareholders or shareholder appreciation investments. They need a restructuring and refocusing.

  • The Crash In Oil Prices Offers The Opportunity Of A Lifetime - I Beg To Differ [View article]
It would be nice to see how XOM business is split between using oil as input and selling oil as output. I don't know what percent of cash come from each unit but while one is hurt the other is helped.

benefit of being an integrated major. but, maybe not benefit enough?

  • Buybacks Signaling A Top In The Markets? Corporate CEOs Vs. Warren Buffett [View article]
oil is typically at new highs before a crash (more than 10% correction).
interest rates and oil are both low supporting higher stock valuations.

I just read some intersting insights on the market from the brooklyn investor that is worth googling. He has a great web site anyway. Check it out.

  • Averaging Down: Up To My Knees In Oil [View article]
I sold a 87.50 put on XOM for 5.60 when it dipped down a month ago. Its a 6 month period. If I get put to, I pay 81.90. I figure that is a great price for this dividend stalwart. If I do not get put to, I have already invested the premium in HAL at $38. Will repeat this spring if prices are lower.

a solid call on your part. The split occurred below the high but I see its an important earnings coming up - 1st Y/Y comparison with Homelink product.
Automotive stocks are doing well overall with another 17M potential year coming up. ONeil Trader, do you have an update on this company? Will you write after the earnings announcement?
