The Lumia 925 (NOK) is officially revealed. Thanks to its aluminum frame, it's ~50g lighter than the 920, and ~30g lighter than the 928. Otherwise, the specs resemble the 928's: a 4.5," 1280x768, OLED display, a dual-core, 1.5 GHz., Qualcomm (QCOM) processor, and an 8.7MP camera with optical image stabilization. There's no xenon flash, but there is an advanced camera app that leverages Scalado. Nokia will be charging a steep unsubsidized price of €469 ($609) when the 925 hits China and Europe this June. But T-Mobile USA (TMUS) is expected to sell it for less than $100 subsidized. Shares -5%. Were investors expecting a 41MP sensor PureView phone?

Microsoft (MSFT +0.7%) roundup: 1) An upcoming Surface tablet will feature a 7.5" high-res display, but mass-production won't start until Q1 '14, says NPD. 2) Acer is apparently set to launch an 8" Windows 8 Pro tablet that will sell for $380; the cheapest iPad Mini goes for $329. 3) R.I.P. Hotmail: Microsoft has migrated all 400M+ active Hotmail accounts to its Outlook.com platform. 4) Walmart will sell Nokia's (NOK) Lumia 521, a U.S. variant of the Lumia 520, for less than $150 unsubsidized. That gives Windows Phone, which has been at a price disadvantage relative to low-end Android gear, a chance to move downmarket. (Surface launch report)

        outlook.com is excellent.
I have to say, when MS came out with W8, and with it their new UI theme, I was kind of sceptical. When I first started trying it out, I could understand where some of the frustration was coming from. However, as a MSFT stockholder I felt that I should really immerse myself in what they were doing so I began to make a point of only using their services, outlook.com, bing, upgraded to windows 8 on my labtop and got myself a Lumia 920. I still have an android tablet, but using it just makes me want a windows 8 tablet even more!

Now that I am looking from the inside out I am even more bullish on the stock then I was before. Even with all it's downfalls, and even as a MSFT uber-bull I can still admit to the issues, I can see where they are going with it and I am a believer. The better the cogs and the more of them I get, the more money my machine spits out.

To me the idea of selling parts of my magic money machine just because I can get more for them then I paid is silly. The success of Windows 8 can not be adequately judged for many years still. It is to mobile what windows 3.1 was to the desktop. It took until windows 98 to really even start to get it right and until XP really to call it a success. Analysis of Tech has been "Appleised" in that success and failure is judged by number of units sold in the short term, but MS has never been about this, it has been about penetration. They currently own the vast majority of non-mobile computer systems, whether for business or home use. You could not go through your day without Microsoft software having a major influence in your life, on multiple levels. You could easily go a week without any contact with Apple, other then the single product, the iphone.

I predict in a few years, and a number of upgrades down the road, mobile, and its spawn, touch, computing will not look anything like it started, ie like an ipad. The market is very, very, young in the grand scheme of things. Microsoft knows how to get these things right, and I think they have laid a solid foundation with windows 8, and the "modern ui" style of touch.

Microsoft (MSFT) is working with OEMs on "small devices powered by Windows," outgoing CFO Peter Klein confirms - given past reports, that's not too surprising. Microsoft's reasons why Windows division revenue was healthy in spite of PC weakness: Surface sales and volume licenses to enterprises. OEM Windows revenue (+17%) was bolstered by Win. 8 deferred revenue recognition, but that won't last. Server & Tools remains strong: multi-year licensing revenue rose 20%, System Center revenue +16%, and SQL Server +22%. Office division multi-year licensing +16%; Office 365 is on a $1B/year run rate. MSFT +2.7% AH. (FQ3: I, II) (slides) (prepared remarks)

No mercy has been shown to Microsoft (MSFT -4.3%) today in the wake of IDC's figures (blamed in part on Win. 8) and Goldman's downgrade. Goldman now sees the PC/tablet sales ratio falling to 59/41 in 2014, and thinks Microsoft could respond with price cuts or SG&A spending cuts. Nomura's Rick Sherlund wonders if a breakup or privatization is possible for Microsoft. He notes March was better than Jan. or Feb. for PC sales, but is still downbeat. "It really takes your breath away, just how bad the quarter was." Separately, Argus has downgraded Intel (INTC -2%) to Hold.

Yet the apple cheerleaders are attacking him for the implications that they perceive in the title.

The sheer idiocy of the Apple fan base as evidenced by the comments in this article, makes, imo the greatest bear case possible.

oh yeah, long Apple

Everyone seems to be caught up on the first, whereas the reality of the authors thesis lends more weight to the second.

The concept of breaking a stocks price into price for current worth and cost for future worth is nothing new, it's actually the cornerstone of value investing. However, most die hard Grahmian value investors don't buy tech companies as a rule for the reasons outlined in the article. The author's attempt to apply this types of analysis to a company like Apple is extremely interesting.

Looking forward to future articles. We need more of this on this site.

Well this is exactly what MS is doing, and by making all three devices run exactly the same, I think that they have taken your concept to the next level.
Apple (AAPL) has withdrawn proposal #2, preferred stock shareholder voting requirement and all, in response to the injunction placed earlier today at Greenlight Capital/David Einhorn's request. Apple: "We are disappointed with the court’s ruling. Proposal #2 is part of our efforts to further enhance corporate governance and serve our shareholders’ best interests." Greenlight on the injunction: "This is a significant win for all Apple shareholders and for good corporate governance." (court ruling)

"The Z10 and BB10 represent a radical reinvention of the BlackBerry," says Walt Mossberg in a somewhat favorable review: he likes BB10's gesture support and keyboard, but criticizes its browser and dearth of cloud services. The Verge's Joshua Topolsky gives the Z10 a score of 7/10, praising its design and camera while criticizing its battery life and app ecosystem, as well as BlackBerry Hub. Engadget's Tim Stevens strikes a similar tone. As rumored, the Z10 runs on Qualcomm's (QCOM) popular MSM8960 processor. RIMM -7.4%. (more)

Is the bad news fully baked in? Apple (AAPL +3.6%), which closed yesterday trading around 7.4x FY13E EPS (exc. cash), has rallied back above $500 in spite of Pac Crest's downgrade. The company has received favorable notes today as well: Cowen says its checks lead it to believe Apple's smartphone share rose to ~23.5% in calendar Q4 from 16.4% in Q3. Some suppliers are also up: CRUS +4.5%. OVTI +1.4%. Sterne Agee is defending Skyworks (SWKS +3.5%) after meeting with its CFO.

I picked up my wife's iphone yesterday, after using nothing but my Lumia 920 for a few months and I was astounded at how old it seemed. The screen was so small. The shape was blocky. The icons seemed so antiquated. I asked her how to share an ebook we had purchased so I could read it on my phone, which is a one swipe one click operation on WP8, and she reminded me that on iphone you can't share. It hit me like a ton of bricks. the game has most definitely changed and Nokia is leading the second stage of the mobile revolution which W8 has created. Those who doubt this better hold on for dear life.

P.S. not one person who has seen my 920 work has had anything but praise for it and many have said they will be dropping their iphones for WP8 once their contracts run out.
