How To Know What Rate Of Return To Expect From Your Stocks: Part 2 [View article]
I am not sure if you are well known outside of SA, I only know of you from here, but you really should be. You have taken concepts that seem so complex and have shown that they are in essence very simple. you have also provided a tool to help us benefit from this knowledge. I was a trial subscriber to fastgraphs but I cancelled because I didn't understand what it was showing me. I may have to reconsider this. Either way, I will surely keep not only reading your work, but studying it.

the concept of reducing your cost on long term investments by selling options is so elegantly simple, yet incredibly brilliant. just change the denominator.....

i have seen a trend on sa for authors such as yourself to use blogs etc to contain their links in one place in an effort to make them more accessable. perhaps their is a need for a site feature that would make this more elegant?
my current tv is a 62" screen, cost me about 2500$. They way apple's products are priced at a premium means a 62" tv is going to cost 5000$+. I am not going to replace my large screen tv that plays bluerays epically (is that a word? is now) for a 5000$ version, or a smaller one at the same price point. I can't think of anything that would make me change that position. Streaming? Can't stream blueray, too much data, and anyone who says blueray is dead has never watched a movie like Avatar, for example, on a quattron.
Honestly, I think the whole Itv thing is a media hype nothing more. Who's going to pay 5 grand to put a giant ipad on the wall? They would have to introduce something so epic, like maybe smellovision, in order to convince me to get rid of my quattron for a new set, especially since smartglass is going to give me everything that most people think ITV is going to give me, and I can use my existing hardware.
Microsoft (MSFT), whose tablet launch this week drew a bit of media attention, may also be developing its own smartphone, "industry sources" tell Nomura's Rick Sherlund. If the rumor is true, Nokia (NOK), which has bet its increasingly threatened future on Windows Phone, can't be thrilled about it. (Windows Phone 8) [View news story]
msft is making devices to show the world, and hardware developers their vision of computing as it relates to windows 8. They are flagships nothing more.

what do you think the millions of servers are running on? imo the move to cloud strengthens intc as more people get on board, with ever more powerful demands, any loss in client is made up in servers.
people spend too much focusing on the consumer side of computing. I recently got my teeth xrayed on a device runnings windows, most likely with intel inside. i highly doubt the next time I go they'll be using a tablet!
thanks guys, bonds/debt is an area of investing I know less than a little about. if I am reading you correctly, the risk is that since you would have to roll your short term 2 year borrowing 5 times, to equal your ten year loan, a narrowing of the spread can jeopardize your profits.

we haven't seen anything yet. apple has pushed around too many people for too long. the carriers, the hardware manufacturers and MS themselves will do anything to make sure this succeeds. In the end Apple may still be left with the "cool kids", but this is a minority, just like it was in highschool. even during the last few years while apple has been "on top", the reality is that the majority of computing is done using MS software. I got my teeth xrayed last thursday on a device running MS software. go through your day and seriously look around. the computers that you use to check out your groceries, MS. the computer you work on at work, MS. in the restaurants, at your bank. my pvr runs on software made by microsoft! this company permeates our lives in so many ways. they have let apple have this first round in mobile while they gathered their strength. windows 8, skype, xbox, nokia, b&n, office, enterprise, smartglass, kinnect, sql, azure, these guys are everywhere. the cool kids can have their icrap, all that does for us is makes sure they don't see us coming. but me thinks they're done waiting.

yikes I highly doubt msft sees 25 any time soon. i bought a week or so ago and will add once it pulls back from its current rally. this stock and company for that matter have a lot of negative overhang from the past, but it seems like times are changing. at current values it is highly oversold and if it can break free of the bad mojo thats been plagueing it since its dot com fall, it has some serious upside.
rs, just wanted to say thanks, I added msft, jnj, xom and pg in part due to your articles. it is not just the picks, but the general philosophy you espouse which has benefitted me.
Microsoft's Big Announcement On Monday: Rumors Are Swirling [View article]
Notice how all of the negativity on these forums are coming from the same group of people who obviously haven't even seen the Surface. they see the world through apple coloured glasses. tablet war, what tablet war?
also, keep in mind that the Surface is just one of many devices coming our way to bring us windows 8, and as such is not the be all and end all, rather just the beginning, and a symbol of what windows 8 claims to do, unite all of computing under one banner, and it wont be apples.
how much is this going to cost? my 62" samsung quattron that I have hanging on my wall was costly enough. a 62" ipad is going to be very very pricey and therefore not something I'd even consider. since most of apples current device costs are subsidised through carriers, whos going to subsidise my tv? most likely nobody so the entire 5000$+ cost will be born by me. why would I do this when MS is going to be giving me all the functionality you speak of through xbox and streamglass and I can use my existing hardware? A screen is just a screen and I don't need to prove how hip I am by pasting an apple logo on anything I own.
I think this tv might be a nail in apples coffin. If Ms can offer what they say they can with windows 8, then your gonna see everyone get on board, pc manufacturers, wireless carriers, tv manufacturers etc etc. It'll be apple against the entire tech industry. why facetime only between apple machines when you can skype to everyone? why buy a costly apple tv when you can use the tv and xbox you already have to do the same thing? why am I typing this on a stupid tablet keyboard when I could be doing so on a Surface?
in the end apple's success started with the "I'm a mac, and I'm a pc" commercial. apple was cool, and ms was a stodgy corporate entity. now apple is the monster corporation which leaves them open to attack in the same way. as well, apple has always been about themselves. they have bullied the carriers, shutout the hardware industry. MS is making a platform that everyone can be a part of.
There is no doubt in my mind that the game has changed and soon apple will be left with just their cult, while the rest of the world uses devices running MS products. To their credit, they have taken this time to make that cult much much bigger, so they aren't going away. however their dominance will soon be over.
Though analysts are impressed with Microsoft Surface (MSFT +3.7%), few see it as a huge threat to the iPad (AAPL +0.6%). Jefferies' Peter Misek thinks Microsoft will need to "significantly undercut" the iPad on pricing (something that's unlikely given its specs) to be competitive, and argues the iPad's 225K+ apps set it apart. However, Forrester's David Johnson believes Windows RT's management features, user interface, and Office support will appeal to enterprise users. (more) [View news story]
