yesterday's rally has nothing to do with blackberry's own stock buyback.

according to the buyback plan, "Daily purchases will be limited to 578,619 common shares, other than block purchases." yesterday's volume was over 12m.

and an institutional purchase is done on an upgrade day when the stock rallied 7%? how stupid are those professional buyers?

suddenly remember last time this James Faucette guy downgraded bbry to Underweight bbry lost 6%. this time upgraded back to Equal-weight bbry gained more than 7%. both time target price stayed at $7.

very powerful guy, more powerful than all the SA writers and commenters combined.

offering an one-stop solution is the theme of this past Security Summit.

the most frustrating and most costly problem for the corporate customers is to piecemeal a system based on components from different vendors. a single application has that problem. a system has 1000 folds of size of that problem. one vendor's end-to-end solution, if works well, eliminates that problem, or at least reduced that greatly. see how CRM becomes?

somebody may argue quickly, "then that's a vendor lock-in". so since you don't want vendor lock-in, why don't you tell the different vendors to come up with a complete standard solution each, so the companies can switch from one to another, at will and on a dime, just like people change socks in the morning?

just run into another paid item on Windows 10. language options. $24.99 to download.

looks like to me MS is changing their business model for OS toward that of Apple, free plain vanilla OS, anything else nickel and dime.

this is a risky change based on MS's customer base. i am for sure will hold on to updating my other machines until W7 is out of support.

  • BlackBerry -4.9%; Chen talks turnaround, potential smartphone pullback [View news story]
    bwsf,

    "You are easily impressed."

    yes, i am. :)

my bar for blackberry is very low, hanging in there, and the stock fluctuate.

"It's an embarrassing failure whatever you call it."

again depends on your expectation. looking at blackberry's market cap. what do you want blackberry to do? Apple things?

i treat blackberry as one of those cigar butt companies...

in my early years, i bought cheap used cars, cleaned them up, fixed them, mostly emission and electric problems, and sold them for a profit of from 100 bucks to 2 grands. that paid for my computer science degree, including room and board. how the cars looked like in my eye? is there a profit to make. that's the only thing i see.

    ELLAS,

iOS and Android's success are due to its app developer communities, imo. people buy iPhone or Android phone because the apps. OS and hardware is a very small part of the equation.

Android is open source. Apple just opened source its new development language, SWIFT. there're almost unlimited number of apps for anybody. blackberry was specialized in enterprise communication features. it's coming back to its root, enterprise mobile. many things happened in this short 20 months. look at their Security Summit, they are getting their act together.

in another word, marketing will not offset the lack of apps for the consumer market. most people want a **computer** in their hand. not only a phone. blackberry has some specialized features which appeal to a special group. but for most of the people out there, they want the functions in the apps, not only those in the OS.

John Chen is smart not to waste that 3b cash on consumer marketing. they understand blackberry handset is a tool, not a toy. if blackberry goes the Thorsten Heins way, the stock would have been delisted at this moment.

    RJ, you nailed it,

"Perhaps more than skin, both Chen and Watsa have successful reputations on the line. That doesn't mean they won't fail, just that the motivation is keen."

sounds like Chen is prepping the market to switch their focus on blackberry brand from device to security (and productivity?) software.

a lot of longs who have been focusing on the comeback of blackberry handsets will probably walk. the ones that understand software business may pick up some cheap shares.

making one high end device per year is not to retract. making low end device belong to Chinese vendors. it's a right strategy to move up the food chain.

long or short in the near term, is anyone's choice.

    @bitwrangler,

so you mean market is efficient at any point in time... this sounds like an engineer's view of the market. it's like "the function is continuous and smooth".

the information available to the market is not always complete. so market is sometimes efficient sometimes not. a stock fluctuating 50%~100% like bbry is the best example that the market is inefficient. imo.

if the market is efficient what are we doing here?
