  • An opinion piece titled "The Other Government Motors" from the WSJ isn't too subtle about taking apart the Q1 profit Tesla Motors (TSLA +1.4%) reported as it hitched a free ride with U.S. taxpayers. The zero-emission tax credits Tesla can sell to other automakers and the generous $7.5K federal tax credits to motivate buyers are the big two complaints. But what isn't entirely clear is why other car companies selling EVs aren't lumped into the same discourse? [View news story]
Actually, the demographic that buys Tesla cars also purchases solar installations on their homes.

  • Perhaps take it with a grain of salt, but a surprising 44% of consumers responding to a survey on the impact of an online sales tax say they will buy less items online if the legislation is passed into law. The number rises to 75% for the 18-year to 25-year old demographic (ZUMZ, ANF, URBN, ARO, BKE, VRA). Though seemingly a bad development for Amazon (AMZN -0.6%) and eBay (EBAY), many retail analysts thinks those shopping habits are pretty hard to break. [View news story]
Consumers may initially cut back on their purchases online. Long term, companies like Amazon and EBAY are positioning themselves infrastructure companies in addition to actual selling. The Amazon servers supporting other retailers and the payment processing done by EBAY are signs that neither are relying on being known as a retail company.

  • A Crony Capitalist For The Space Age, The Renewables Age, And For The Age Of Obama [View article]
It does read more like a political statement given the author's apparent dislike of President Obama. Not sure he is up on the latest in space travel news, but the author seems to be unaware that since the Russians now have a monopoly on human space travel, they jacked up the prices dramatically. SpaceX has a comfortable price umbrella to use to negotiate with NASA when they finish development and testing of the life support systems for their space craft.
