  • Should Tesla Buy Fiat?  [View article]
Right now Tesla has huge (Apple-like) margins per car. A good portion of that is from selling direct (avoiding a dealer network), and a good chunk more is from only selling at the high end.

Buying Fiat and Chrysler would kill those margins -- which would kill innnovation.

But George's data is out of date. How can we rely on his information when it is based upon outdated information?

As to whether it's too late to buy -- it may be. But it doesn't appear to be on the "unsustainable" trajectory presented in the article.

When did you write this? The date is today, but you are working with outdated numbers. In the last quarter, Tesla made a profit.

    From yesterday's USA Today:

"Investors are liking what they saw in the details of the electric-car maker's earnings report. The $11 million first-quarter profit shattered the assumption that no automaker can make money selling small numbers of plug-in cars. And Tesla posted a 17% gross profit margin, using American workers, in an industry where 10% is considered outstanding."

Now you may disagree with the long term sustainability of that information. But to publish your article without acknowledging the 1st quarter earnings report is disingenuous.
