I don't think you should shrug off TV as an non-effective entertainment option. Granted, there are a lot of bad shows out there, but there are also many good ones. In fact, I think I enjoy watching an NFL game on TV vs. going to one in person. No ticket necessary, no traffic, no crowds, no lines, no overpriced beer/food, and always indoors.
Otherwise I enjoyed the article. Video gaming is still one of the cheapest recession-resistant forms of entertainment out there.
